"Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." Acts 2:2-4
Oh my. What in the world is going on here? A lot of amazing and spectacular things happen in Scripture, and this is definitely one of them. But, what does it mean?
Rather than to try to explain or reach final conclusions about what "speaking in tongues" is, how about I just tell you what happened that is undeniable and affects every believer. Jesus had told them to go wait for the Holy Spirit and this is how The Spirit came. It was powerful and purposeful and personal. Powerful... wind and fire. Purposeful... equipping them to communicate the gospel, and personal... it came to each one of them.
Apply just that to us today. Is the Holy Spirit in your life, powerful, purposeful and personal? If not, I recommend you seek that. You see, the Holy Spirit is not the afterthought of the Godhead. The Holy Spirit is essential to the full life of every believer. The Holy Spirit is what is lacking for many of us in the church today.
We need to make our faith more powerful, purposeful and personal. The Holy Spirit is the key. When we do we are empowered to worship, witness and work for God's purposes. If you are lacking something, this may very well be it. Read His Word about it and ask God about it. Could change your life. Changed mine.
