Our Worth

"And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered." Matthew 10:30

We often use this verse to describe God's omniscience, that is, His knowledge of everything. God knows everything that has happened, is happening and will happen. He does that without interfering with our free will. That is a power we are maybe incapable of perceiving. This verse is in context given to assure us of our value. In a comparison with sparrows, Jesus illustrates that we are far more valuable than little birds that are sold for a penny, and God knows all about them too. Even when they die. He also assures the crowd He is teaching that we should not fear so much those that can kill our bodies and be more concerned about those who can kill our souls. Thus saying that our souls are more valuable than our bodies. I believe a strong case can be made from the passage that contains this verse that we don't completely understand how much He values us. Or to be more personal, how much He loves us.

For whatever reason today I am struck by this truth when I consider all the people who come to Grace Harbor Church and School. When I see them during the week and on Sundays I am reminded just how much I should love them when I think how much God our Father loves them. I should care about all the little things in their lives. To be specific to the verse, I should care if their hair is falling out or getting thicker, or changing color or styles. People and the details of their lives are important to God and they should be to us too.

Yet, by comparison our greatest caring for others should be about their souls. Because that is the eternal part of them. That is the part that will spend eternity somewhere. We should care at least as much about someone's soul as we do their hair, right? People are important. They are what truly makes a church or a school. I can picture that when Jesus said these words he probably reached out and touched someone's hair. He has a way of touching us with His love and we have much to learn.

In His Service,
Pastor Fred
