Death has Limits

“But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him." Acts 2:24

Peter continues to preach. God the Father raised His only Son from the dead. The death of Jesus was agonizing, but the glory of His resurrection completely overcame that.

The Meaning of the Advent Wreath

The Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that symbolizes the passage of the four weeks of Advent. It is a circular candle holder that typically holds five candles. During the season of Advent one candle on the wreath is lit each Sunday until all of the candles, including the fifth candle, are lit on Christmas Day or Christmas Eve. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the celebration of the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Most Advent wreaths use three colors of candles – purple, pink, and white.

Give Thanks

"Enter His gates with thanksgiving; go into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him and praise His Name." Psalm 100:4

Something simple and sweet on Thanksgiving Day. May it remind you of the most important thing. Like these lyrics to the beautiful song say.....

“This Man”

"This man was handed over to you by God's deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put Him to death by nailing Him to a cross." Acts 2:23

Peter is preaching. He is full of the Holy Spirit and laying down the truth very succinctly and clearly. He isn't railing and he isn't sugar-coating, that is for sure.

Accreditation

"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through Him, as you yourselves know." Acts 2:22

This verse brings up some things for me that I would like to share with you. They are part of my core experience. Part of what has shaped me through almost 50 years of ministry.

Being Thankful

“You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.” 2 Corinthians 9:11

Thanksgiving is next week and once again it snuck up on me. This year I do not need to try very hard to find and acknowledge all those things that I should be thankful for.

All of me

"As for God, his way is perfect; The Lord’s word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in him." Psalm 18:30

In the last few months, I’ve undergone a whirlwind of transformation. Back in August, I moved out of my house. Out of my marriage. Out of the only life I’ve known for the last 10 years. Separated from my husband by mutual lies and deception, brokenness and despair. I embarked on a journey marked with anguishing heartbreak, hard hearted rebellion, humble submission, and, ultimately, beautiful restoration. My first step through this unknown and unfamiliar door, I began searching for a self who I didn’t even know was there. In the world of the human psyche, we all have what is known as a “lost self,” a “false self,” and a “disowned self”, each one formed during the earliest stages of our existence. Dr. Harville Hendrix defines the lost self as “those parts of your being that you had to repress because of the demands of society”, the false self as “the façade that you erected in order to fill the void created by this repression and by a lack of adequate nurturing,” and the disowned self as “the negative parts of your false self that met with disapproval and were therefore denied.” What I have since discovered in unearthing each aspect that compromises my whole my whole self is the darkness of my own heart, my overwhelming propensity for sin, and the amazing grace of a loving Creator who knows about it all. He truly loves me. All of me.

Saved

"And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved." s 2:21

Love this verse. Love that it is an Old Testament verse. Love that Luke quotes it here in Acts.

Signs and Wonders

"I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord" Acts 2:19-20

Count on this. The Lord will return. He said so and Joel and most every other Bible author said so too.

"Prophesying"

"Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams. Even on my servants, both men and women I will pour out My Spirit in those days and they will prophesy." Acts 2:17b-18

Sure sounds like everybody is going to have the Holy Spirit poured out on them and prophesy. Peter continues to quote the prophet Joel and he is clear that the empowerment of the Holy Spirit is on every believer.

Monday, November 16, 2015

The Prophet Joel, Part One

"No, this is what was spoken by the Prophet Joel: In the last days God says, I will pour out my spirit on all people." Acts 2:16-17a

Peter quotes Joel's prophecy of the coming of the Holy Spirit and the inauguration of the last days. Whenever we hear the term "last days" we seem to either start looking for our tinfoil hats or start crying “when, when, when?" So much so that we can totally miss the power of the passage, which is the fact that God has poured out His Spirit on all people. Sure, this is huge in general, but how about personally?

"Veterans Day"

"Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends" John 15:13
"With Your help, I can advance against a troop; with my God I can scale a wall" Psalm 18:29

Today is Veteran’s Day, a day set aside by our nation to recognize and honor our military veterans. Throughout the history of our great country, there have always been many brave men and women who have been willing to sacrifice much and to place themselves in harm’s way in defense of the freedoms we enjoy, and which we too often take for granted. I thank each and every one of them for their service, and I thank God for them.

"Drunk Jokes"

"These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only 9 in the morning!" Acts 2:15

When you are going to preach a lengthy sermon it is not bad form to open with a little bit of humor. Drunk jokes work as a common ground opener. Everybody is familiar with how ridiculous and embarrassing drunk people are.

“Listen Carefully”

"Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say." Acts 2:14

We really do need to listen more carefully. The hardest part of listening is twofold. One, to shut up for a minute, the second to not just load what you want to say while someone else is speaking. Not easy at all. Think about what is being said here.

Tuesday, November 10, 2015

"Amazing and Perplexing"

"Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. Utterly amazed, they asked: "Are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each one of us hears them in his own native language? Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs-- we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, "What does this mean?" Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine." Acts 2:5-13

Long passage, but it is the context of the storyline. So everybody hears the gospel in their own language. Pretty amazing huh? Miraculous even. So once we get over the tongues part of the miracle and the obvious purpose for it we must decide whether our reaction is one of being amazed or perplexed. Amazed is the right answer.

The Holy Spirit

"Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." Acts 2:2-4

Oh my. What in the world is going on here? A lot of amazing and spectacular things happen in Scripture, and this is definitely one of them. But, what does it mean?

“TOGETHER”

"When the Day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place." Acts 2:1

It’s always a good idea to be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing, with the right people. For example... the right time is Sunday, the right place is Grace Harbor (or somewhere), the right thing is worshiping and the right people are other Christians. When you miss church, you miss not only what can happen to you, but you miss what happens to others and what happens to us together too.

“Church Business”

"So they proposed two men: Joseph called Barsabbas, (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, "Lord you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots and the lot fell to Matthias, so he was added to the 11 apostles." Acts 1:23-26

The early church conducted the business of replacing Judas by casting lots. Note that they proposed two men who were qualified and then basically drew straws. If they had voted it seems to me that a guy with three names was at a disadvantage. Just saying.

Matthias got the short or long straw or the low or high number on the dice, depending on how you look at it. I think a random system that picks between two worthy possibilities certainly keeps influence and popularity out of the formula.

Can you imagine? ..... No debates, no endorsements, no fundraising, no politics, no nasty commercials. No agendas, no games, no finagling and no monkey business. Sounds good to me. I am guessing that Joseph, Barsabbas, Justus, whatever his name was, didn't have an attitude about it.

Oh wait, did I mention that they prayed for God's will and guidance? How often we forget to seek Him in everything, every time too.

Trying to be about His business,
Pastor Fred

"Apostleship"

"Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection." Acts 1:21-22

The eleven remaining Apostles needed to replace Judas. It was necessary. An Apostle by definition is one who was with Jesus from Baptism to Ascension. Paul is the only exception to this rule. The 12 Apostles all met those criteria and so should the replacement for Judas. They all were eyewitnesses of the teaching and miracles.

"Judas"

"In those days Peter stood up among the believers (a group numbering about a hundred and twenty) and said, "Brothers, the scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through the mouth of David concerning Judas, who served as a guide for those who arrested Jesus, he was one of our number and shared in this ministry.“ (With the reward he got for his wickedness, Judas bought a field where he fell headlong, his body burst open and all his intestines spilled out. Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this, so they called that field in their language, Akeldama, that is, field of blood) “For,” said Peter, “it is written in the book of Psalms," ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it, ’and, ’May another take his place of leadership.’" Acts 1:15-20

Judas, like Jezebel and Barabbas, are to this day unpopular children's names. The very mention of Judas is met with disdain and negative reaction.

“A Hundred and Twenty”

"In those days Peter stood up among the believers a group numbering about a hundred and twenty)" Acts 1:15

Several things come to mind about this verse as I think about what was going on in those days. Those days must have been remarkable. Imagine gathering and waiting in that upper room. Some expecting with bold faith for something to happen soon, others wondering whether anything would ever happen, a few maybe thinking 'what in the world am I doing here'.

“THANKSGIVING IS PRECIOUS” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

The commercialization of everything in our consumeristic and materialistic society is totally out of control. Christmas stuff is up in September and the headlong rush into the “season” straight out of summer is only slowed down by the turning of Halloween into a National Holiday. What? Since when did Halloween become such a big deal? What happened to a simple neighborhood trick or treat tradition? “All Saint Day” or “Day of the Dead” has become an adult event with kids tagging along for candy. It is all about money and buying stuff and yet another excuse for an over-stimulated culture to “PARTY”.

This is why Thanksgiving is under attack these days. There is a strong movement to end it and replace it with a day to celebrate “Immigrants and Refuges”. What? Certainly we should be concerned about the plight of these being victimized by other’s agendas, but let’s address the need, don’t celebrate it! I know it is hard to turn thankfulness into a moneymaker, but if I am already under scrutiny for saying, “Merry Christmas”, instead of “Happy Holidays“, where will the madness stop?

"One Accord" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers." Acts 1:14

So the Eleven are joined by many others in the Upper Room. It should be noted that men and women were united in prayer, including His family; His mother Mary and His half-brothers. Can you imagine? Still grieving and going through a host of emotions; some anticipating, some wondering, some doubting and some not sure what to think. But, together, in one accord (not talking about a Honda here) talking about spiritual unity. They were just praying, seeking the Lord and being obedient to wait, as they were instructed.

We have much to learn about unity, obedience and togetherness. It was not an open forum or a two hall meeting. It was a prayer gathering asking for God's provision, will and guidance, His power and presence.

“THEY WHO?” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Then they return to Jerusalem from the hill called the Mount of Olives, a Sabbath day walk from the city. When they arrived they went upstairs to the room where they were staying. Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot, and Judas son of James." Acts 1:12-13

When I read and study the Bible I like to try and figure out who people are. So when it says they, I ask, "They who?" Easy in this passage because their names are listed. A familiar list, all the Apostles except Judas Iscariot who had hung himself.
They, the eleven now, had not walked far, a Sabbath's day journey was a common measurement used by Jews equal to about 3,000 feet. A little more than half a mile. They started out from the Mount of Olives where the Ascension had taken place and now we're gathering in an upper room to pray and wait. Like other passages of Scripture, no details about the conversation between them is given. But, you know there was talk. They had just seen Christ ascend and had been visited by angels. Maybe they were silent. I know at times when I have been greatly impacted I tend to clam up for a while. What would you have done? What would you be feeling and thinking? Picture yourself there. Amazing.

"The Ascension" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid Him from their sight." Acts 1:9

Not much is said about the ascension of Jesus. Simply put, He had to go to finish His work and if He didn't go, He couldn't come back. Everything He did He promised and foretold He would do. All He has yet to do. He will do just as He promised.
How strange it must have been to see Him go. Are you ready to see Him again? Could you have let Him go easily? He is in us who believe. He never leaves or forsakes us. Hope this gives you a pause to think about how you would have felt to be there and how you feel right now being reminded that He is in you.

“Joy Indestructible” Devotion by Madison Pinto, ASU Campus Ministry

"There are many who say, 'Who will show us some good?' Lift up the light of your face upon us, O LORD!' You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and wine abound." Psalm 4:6-7

Human beings exist in the present, but they often live in the past or in the future. I can't even begin to tell you how many of my thoughts live in other places other than today. I dream about the places I'll go, the people I'll meet, the person I might someday marry, the children I might someday have. Particularly in harder seasons, my mind is drawn into these fantasies. Sometimes, I believe that if I was there, then I would finally feel joyful all the time.

“A Good Question” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"After He said this, He was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. They were looking intently up into the sky as He was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. "Men of Galilee, they said, why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." Acts 1:9-11

I don't know how long they stared. Long enough for God to send angels to help them move forward. The shock and awe of the ascension was replaced by the overwhelming phenomena of angels in their presence, plus speaking to them. The question the angels ask is a great one. One we all need to answer more often than we do. "Why do you stand here looking into the sky?" My mom used to ask me a similar question as I stood staring into the refrigerator. She would ask... "What are you waiting for.... Wagon Train?" (A soon to be forgotten line from a black and white TV show that inferred that I had been waiting too long for something that wasn't going to happen soon.) That meant for me to make up my mind.

“Whaddya Mean?” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"He said to them: "It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:7-8

I know when we are not sure we like or need time to think about what we just heard we might ask, "whaddya mean?" I am not particularly fond of that question. As a parent, my stock response was... "I mean what I say and say what I mean." Eventually such conversations often ended with my question, "What part of NO don't you understand?"

Love is a Verb! Devotion by Church Council Member, Gabrielle Botts

“9 Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. 11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. 12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. 13 Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.

14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.

17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone. 18 If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord. 20 On the contrary:

“If your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” "
Romans 12:9-21

I know this is a somewhat long passage of Scripture, but I couldn’t pick just a few of these verses, they’re all so good! So, instead, I’ll let the verses speak for themselves and keep my commentary brief (how much more often should we listen, and contemplate, rather than speak?! Speaking to myself here!)

"AGENDA ITEMS" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"So when they met together, they asked Him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" Acts 1:6

We human types, Apostles or not, can't seem to maintain our big picture objectivity very long. After the directive from Jesus to go to Jerusalem and wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit, they just had to ask if He was gonna take over and disempower the Romans and the power structure of the Temple Priests and frankly maybe use them in the new world order.

"GOD'S PERFECT PLAN FOR US" Devotion by Church Council Member, Patrice Parker

“Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” Matthew 6:34

Every day when I pray the first thing that I say is “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for today.”

Every day is a gift, a chance to begin again, and just like that saying that goes back to sometime long ago, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Kinda corny but so true. Every day is a fresh start, a day to try again. Start to change a bad habit, or better yet, time to begin a new one.

"THE PROMISED GIFT" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"On one occasion, while he was eating with them, He gave them this command : "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." Acts 1:4-5

This is a wonderful example of God keeping His promises. We know the Holy Spirit came. We know He is in each of us and empowers us. But, like the early followers of Christ we must be willing to receive commands and obey. The disciples did as they were commanded. We should take heed. If we lack power in our lives, attaining it begins with surrender. We must trust the Lord's instructions. Jesus shared this directive over a meal. I am confident that they had no idea what this promise meant. But, that is faith in action, doing what the Lord says til we understand better. Not easy, but more effective than second guessing or disobeying for sure. The ingredients of faithfulness are in His directives. Hear them? LISTEN.... WAIT... OBEY. It is always as He says.

Tuesday, October 13, 2015

“JESUS IS CLEAR” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“He said to them: It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:7-8

Jesus is so clear when He speaks. He is corrective and inspiring at the same time. The disciples are so like us. We want to know what we want to hear. And...we don't want to hear what we need to know. Basically Jesus tells them they don't get to know the details, but they will be empowered to fulfill His plan. What about my plans? My ideas? If I were God..... etc., etc. It is like when my mother told me what to do and I tried to change the subject or tell her something I already did or could do. Then she would just repeat the directive until I did what I was supposed to do. What is God expecting us to do? We probably ought to get on that first. Like the old saying goes..."what part of no don't you understand?" After I was done trying to distract my mom from her original directive, she narrowed it down to a one word directive. "Trash!!" What's one word directive do you need to obey from God? "Pray!", "Study", "Go", "Give", "Serve", "Shh".

"Faith and Deeds" Devotion by Council Member, Gerry Mouzis

What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. James 2:14-17

Very strong words from James, brother of Jesus. In fact, this particular passage of Scripture has been questioned and debated by theologians and so-called religious intellectuals since the time of the Reformation, if not before. Are we saved by faith? Or are we saved by deeds or works?

“CONVINCING PROOFS” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"After his suffering, he showed himself to these men and gave many convincing proofs that He was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God." Acts 1:3-4

Phrase by phrase is one good way to discover the deeper and richer meaning of Scripture. When we slow down the words a little, we can harvest more insight from His Word.

1. After His suffering--- on the cross 2. He showed Himself--- chose to reveal

“THE ACTS OF THE APOSTLES” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles He had chosen.” Acts 1:1-2

The former book is the gospel of Luke, where we first see the name of Theophilus, which means 'lover of God'. Theophilus may be real or a reference to all God-lovers. Regardless, Luke writes Acts as a continuation of his gospel account, focusing now on the early church and chronicling the acts of the faithful in the spread of the good news of Jesus Christ.

"Touch the Word Made Flesh” Devotion by Madison Pinto, ASU Campus Ministry

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…

Before He ever set foot on earth, Jesus was the Word. He is not like it but is it. He is the very embodiment of truth. A living, breathing testimony of God established before the foundation of the world.

The Word came to earth. He lived and walked among the masses. He approached the outcasts. He started dialogue with sinners. He asked the Pharisees questions. He loved people. The Word did not just preach from afar, but He came into close quarters with those He came to save.

“MINISTRY IS PEOPLE” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Greet Priscilla and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus. Erastus stayed in Corinth, and I left Trophimus sick in Miletus. Do your best to get here before winter. Eubulus greets you, and so do Pudens, Linus, Claudia and all the brothers. The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you." 2 Timothy 4:19-22

The last known written words of Paul the Apostle. Sad to think, but true. But it certainly illustrates that at the core of ministry is people. Look at these names. You don't make these up. These are real lives and people that Paul loves. Some of the names are familiar from other parts of the New Testament, others are only mentioned here. Most importantly is that the whole purpose of God's grand plan is to redeem people. These people and us people too.

"THE EIGHT BEATITUDES OF JESUS" Devotion by Church Council Member, Ron Hodge

Matthew 5:3-10

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.

“BUT THE LORD” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion's mouth. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom to Him be glory forever and ever, Amen." 2 Timothy 4:17-18

I am encouraging all of us today to have our "But the Lord" statements ready. We are far more rehearsed at our mourning than our dancing. We have memorized our rants better than our praises. We know our defeat stories better than our victory testimonies. Somebody say Amen. Life sometimes is more than tough, but the Lord says.... Sure there are troubles in life...But the Lord. I know people can drive me nuts too... But the Lord. Get it? No matter what happens, God can handle it. Read Paul's: But the Lord statement one more time. Now, what is yours? I got mine. I just need to share it more often. Especially with myself.

“PAYBACK” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Alexander the metalworker did me a great deal of harm. The Lord will repay him for what he has done. You too should be on your guard against him, because he strongly opposed our message. At my first defense no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me. May it not be held against them." 2 Timothy 4:14-16

Paul's feelings are obviously all over the place. Like us, he struggles with personal hurts and knowing he should forgive and turn that over to the Lord. He is also feeling alone in the work and wonders where people were when he needed their support. He is real, honest, open, and transparent about what he is going through. As he sorts out and through it all, he ends with grace, saying that he believes wrongs should not be held against others. He does his best to let go. So should we. Let go and let God as the saying goes. All we can control is the grip we hold on the pain that is attached to us. We cannot restore everything or fix much of anything. But He can, if we will give it to Him.

“PERSONAL STUFF” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia and Titus to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you because he is helpful to me in my ministry. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, and my scrolls, especially the parchments." 2 Timothy 4:9-13
Have you ever read someone's diary or journal or personal letters? Life is complicated. Humans make things messy. There are almost too many relational subplots here to address. Without lots of details, here are some points to apply to our lives.

● in good relationships, doing your best is a good thing

● we should try to find positive change and closure in relationships ● people need to be able to go where they should be ● we are never completely alone, people will stick by you no matter what

“LOVE GOD’S PROMISES” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day... and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for His appearing." 2 Timothy 4:8

Some days I can't hear enough of God's promises. Not only for me, but for all of us. See, that is the lesson that I get from Paul today. Not only is he secured for the future, but he wants Timothy and everybody to realize it is true for them too. We can know it is true for us today. Our righteous Judge, Jesus will bring us home someday and we will be with Him forever. What a joyous reminder. We will see Jesus. This being the case, I will now do three things.

1.) Put the future in His hands.

“3 F’s” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." 2 Timothy 4:7

These three f's ... fought, finished and faith surface as an illustration in our English translation of this Bible verse. Funny how we can easily presume that the Scriptures were originally written in English. They weren't, I hope you know. In the Greek, this alliteration probably doesn't even happen. But, my purpose is to help you remember a Bible verse, in English today.

"POURED OUT" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"For I am already being poured out like a drink offering, and the time has come for departure." 2 Timothy 4:6

This verse is personal for me at age 65. Within 5 years I will have been in ministry for 50 years. That is a significant golden anniversary. Dawn and I are approaching 40 years of marriage. Our children are in their 30's. I could be a great grandpa in a few years too. Wow. As I reflect on that I can relate to being poured out and an eventual ministry departure time coming. Like Paul, I must plan ahead. The drink offering was the conclusion of the sacrificial offering in the Levitical system. Paul knows he will be put to death soon, but also that he needs to wrap it up.

“EAR TICKLING” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” 2 Timothy 4:3b-5

Paul makes it clear that those who teach, preach or even witness must be careful not to stray from speaking the truth. Even though people can find somebody to scratch their itch or tickle their fancy, stay the course and share the Word from the Word.

“THE TIME IS HERE” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine." 2 Timothy 4:3

No need to guess when, the time is here. It has been coming for a while and is accelerating. The deterioration of the Bible being seen as the supreme authority about anything is almost completely gone from our mainstream culture. Science, media, academia and majority pop opinion are now the bulwarks of truth. Google, Snopes, Wikipedia and even Pinterest are now the authoritative sources for everything. We are one-click away from being ultimately misled in this information age. What is info anyway? It’s just data from someone's perspective. Ever wonder who and what their agenda or source is? I do. Here are a few examples of sound doctrine that people don't want to hear, or put up with, or even hear as an option.

1) Life begins at conception.

2) Premarital sex is not God's plan

“PREACH THE WORD” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in a view of His appearing and His kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage-- with great patience and careful instruction." 2 Timothy 4:1-2

Preach the Word. Every mentor I have ever had has told me this. Why? Because it is foundational to the calling of pastors. It is also essential to every follower of the Lord as they share their faith in Christ. We must share the truth based on sound doctrine only found in the Bible, The Word of God. But, there is a way to share. Paul instructs us to share with power and authority, and with love and compassion. This cannot be done without correcting and rebuking and cannot be done without encouragement, patience and carefulness. Not always an easy balance without drifting into mediocrity and/or ranting. So, preparation is helpful. Taking what you are doing as serious is necessary, too.

“WISDOM COMES FROM HIS WORD” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus." 2 Timothy 3:14-15

This is written to Timothy who has a wonderful believing mother and grandmother. Count your blessings if you were raised in a Christian home and count them again if the Bible was taught in that home, then count them again if you were part of a church when you were young that taught His Word from His Word.

“I REPEAT” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." 2 Timothy 3:16-17

I have quoted this verse almost as often as any, and for good reason. Here are 5 bullet point reflections I got from this today. If it is fresh…..enjoy, if not, a gentle reminder.

● All Scripture is equally true.

“You Know Better” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance, persecutions, sufferings, what kinds of things happened to me in Antioch, Iconium and Lystra, the persecutions I endured." 2 Timothy 3:10-11

We should all know better. You know how? Just like Timothy should. Time for bullet points.

● By teaching, study His Word. ● By the Christian way of life, live it.

“YOU WILL BE PERSECUTED” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evil men and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived." 2 Timothy 3:12-13

will face persecution. Regrettably, probably why many downplay their faith. We tend to avoid conflict, not fitting in, swimming upstream, not going with the flow. We ignore the signs of societal degradation and moral decay. Like the frog in the kettle we are willing to get slowly cooked before we admit it is too hot. Incremental change is tolerable until we realize we are way off course. We need to resist sooner, speak up louder and not accommodate everything blindly and so willingly. A lot of little hurts combined end up being a big pain. Sin is a slow killer individual, and even more sinister corporately. Jesus and His followers are mocked and scorned, teased and held in low regard. This reality will intensify and not subside. The lies of unbelief will become the accepted norm and belief will become rarer. But.... we must keep the faith, be the light, hold up the banner of truth and press on. He is our guide and He is our hope and salvation. Regardless of what is said or done to us, His truth remains. He is the only Savior of the world.

“I Pray You Enough” Devotion by Council Member Charlotte Adams

I don’t remember the origin of this piece that I became aware of, probably over ten years ago, but I have kept it on my desk and shared it a number of times with people that I thought just needed to hear that someone was praying for them. I have decided to add some Scripture verses to it, and now share it with you. If it speaks to your heart, keep it handy, and maybe even pass it on to someone that comes to mind who you know needs this “ministering” thought at just this very time.

I PRAY YOU ENOUGH . . .

I PRAY YOU ENOUGH sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
Proverbs 15:13 - A happy heart makes the face cheerful.I PRAY YOU ENOUGH rain to appreciate the sun even more.
1 Thessalonians 5:18 - Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. I PRAY YOU ENOUGH happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
Romans 8:26 - In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

"CLEAR FOLLY" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over weak-willed women, who are loaded down with sins, and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to acknowledge the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as faith are concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone." 2 Timothy 3:6-9

This is another whole passage that needs to be shared on one devotional. "They" refers to those who have a form of godliness, but deny its power. Or, they are all talk, slick seducers, preying on those who are at risk and weak. Moses dealt with them, as is mentioned here, and we still deal with them today. Opportunists, snake oil salesmen, prosperity preachers, get rich quick schemers, magic potent vendors, and hot air specialists. You know the type. Guilt trip or tickle your fancy, they are shallow and misleading.

"TERRIBLE" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God-- having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with them" 2 Timothy 3:1-5

This is a longer passage than usual but the content has to stay together for the purpose of impact. I am not an "end of the world doomsayers", but this description of the reality and capacity for the depravity of people is so indicting that it stands on its own and does not need much commentary. We, at best, are greatly compromised and on a very slippery slope. These words of warning should convict us deeply. We must return wholeheartedly to Jesus, who should be our first love. Lord, forgive us for how true this is of not only the world, but ourselves.

"OPPOSITION" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and especially escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will." 2 Timothy 2:25-26

Opposition will always come to any of us who share the truth, even when done tactfully and with love. This passage has some bullet points that can help us understand why people resist and how we should share. Hope you find this insightful.

● Gently instruct

● Be hopeful

● God is in charge of change

"CHOSEN PEOPLE" Devotion by Council Member Hank Botts

"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9

All of us, at some point in our lives, will be faced with rejection. Perhaps it’s that dream job we desired or that prestigious college we wanted to get into. Maybe it’s that guy or gal we fell for who didn’t return our affections. Maybe one of our parents left the situation when we were just a child, and that made us feel rejected. Whatever the cause, it is an awful feeling. Sometimes, we even end up blaming ourselves for the rejection, believing that we are not good enough or that we don’t measure up, or if we could have just done something differently, things would have gone our way.

"KIND TO EVERYONE" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"The Lord's servant must not quarrel; instead be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful." 2 Timothy 2:24

Lots of lessons here.
First, let me remind us that we are all His servants. We are all not to quarrel, and all to be kind to everyone. We may not all teach, but more of us should be able. Of course we all should not be resentful.

"QUARRELS" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Don't have anything to do with foolish and stupid arguments, because you know they produce quarrels." 2 Timothy 2:23

As I begin to write this devotional today, I realize that I need to hear what I am about to say. Particularly in this contentious season of politics, I know I need to be very selective about how many issues I weigh in on. In the matters of faith, and biblical principle yes, matters of personal opinion, not so much. It is a divisive and polarizing time and we should all be careful of being politicized over issues outside the essential doctrines of our faith and practice. When we do take a stand we do not need to be argumentative about it. In the family of God we must protect our unity, above getting everyone to agree with us about everything.

"ALONG WITH THOSE"

"Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." 2 Timothy 2:22

I came to the Lord young, and with my whole heart. I would not be being honest if I said I don't miss those days. The days of “The Jesus Movement” and the 60's. I am reminded of the words of a Simon and Garfunkel song which said...."Time it was and what a time it was, a time of innocence, a time of confidences. Long ago, it must be, I have a photograph, preserve your memories, they're all that's left you."

"KNOWING AND TRUSTING" Devotion by Council Member, John Adams

As a church, we have been continuing to emphasize the critical importance of “knowing” the Word of God (i.e., the Bible) and actually living our lives based upon its absolutely reliable Truths.

"NOBLE PURPOSES"
devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for noble purposes and some for ignoble. If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.” 2 Timothy 2:20-21

When we study the Bible it teaches us principles that can be applied and appropriated in more than one way. For example, the illustration of the house in this passage can refer to the church or the individual. The principle of “cleaning house” is good for the church and the individual. When we “clean house”, which we need to do regularly and also do deep cleaning when it is necessary, the good stuff will remain and the bad stuff has to go. The house, when it is cleansed of all the ignoble stuff, can be more useful for God’s purposes. God sometimes uses us even when we are not completely clean, but He uses the instrument, whether it is an individual or a church, most effectively when it is clean.

“WICKEDNESS”
Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.” 2 Timothy 2:19b

All true followers of Christ have confessed the name of the Lord and are not “Christians” in name only. When I confessed the name of the Lord I accepted His forgiveness and knew that the sin that separated me from Him was hung on the cross and bled for. Jesus did something for me that I could not do for myself. He became the perfect sacrifice for all sin, all of mine, all of yours, all of everybody’s. Not just in that moment on the cross, but for all of history past, present time and all time future. Quite an amazing and overwhelming accomplishment I think. The most important feat ever completed. Just imagine, with one act of total commitment Christ forgave all sin and put in motion the following actions that conquered death and totally crippled the devil’s capability to mess with saved humans without their permission. Wowie! That is so huge that I do not have words to express it.

“GOD'S SOLID FOUNDATION"
Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“Nevertheless, God’s solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription; ‘The Lord knows those who are his”… 2 Timothy 2:19a

Even though there are those who are getting it wrong and nobody is getting it completely right, you can count on the fact that God’s solid foundation stands firm. Amen! We put our faith in Him; not churches or pastors or other books or tradition or anything else. And…. in the final analysis He will know who are His and who are not. So we do not need to pass any final judgement on that. We probably express more opinion about who is in and out than is needed or helpful. Though folks are misled and get into cults, we don’t need to do anything more than stick to the truth and do that in love, and protect everyone from straying as much as possible. See, Paul has a strong opinion about heretics, but even he leaves the final say on the fate of everyone. We should do the same. I know it is tempting to lump big groups of people together and condemn them, but it is not our job. Judgement and vengeance both belong to the Lord. Although this is true we must remain true and vigilant about straying from His Word and Him. Of course the only ways to do that are to study it and understand what it says.

"FAITH DESTROYERS" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.” 2 Timothy 2:18b

The ‘they’ in this verse is referring specifically to the two heretics in the previous verse, Hymenaeus and Philetus. Paul mentions Hymenaeus in 1 Timothy 1:20 where he pairs him up with Alexander and says that he basically had handed them both over to satan. I know these are serious words. It must have been some serious heresy.
Each of us is obviously responsible for our own faith. But, those who cause others to doubt or stumble or stray are spoken of with words like Jesus said…. “It would be better for them if a great mill stone were hung around their neck and they were tossed in the ocean.”

So what is the teachable point here in the end of this verse? Destroying anyone’s faith or even attacking it is not ok. As a matter of fact it is unconscionable. Cults and false teaching are common. Many fall prey to all kinds of bad theology and doctrinal nonsense. Usually this happens because weak believers are not strong or firm enough in their own beliefs. We must be grounded and deep enough not to be led astray. Perhaps the greatest faith destroyer is our own shallow understanding. We believe anything if it works for us in the moment or someone is convincing enough. Hopefully you won’t fall prey to false teaching. Be careful what you believe. Check everything out in the Word of God. Talk to people you can really trust about what you hear being taught. If it sounds like it is off base, it may very well be. Protect yourself by studying and by asking God for discernment. Build your faith so it can’t be destroyed. Build it on a strong biblical foundation. Build your understanding precept on precept. If you don’t, do be wary of Hymenaeus and Philetus, they will destroy what little faith you may have.

“Put Love into Action” Devotion by Council Member Dolly Whitlock

In finishing an email to a friend I wanted to end with “XOXO” (hugs and kisses) as a short-hand way of signaling good thoughts and feelings. With a slip of the finger onto the wrong key, my “XOXO” became “SOSO”.

It struck me that love (affection, caring, and friendship) should not be “so-so”.

“Gangrene” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

"Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have wandered away from the truth." 2 Timothy 2:17-18

This verse is personal with me. The reason may surprise you if you don’t know my story. When I was five I had acute appendicitis that was undiagnosed, and my appendix ruptured. My father drove me to the hospital in the sheriff’s squad car with lights and sirens. From what I am told, gangrene had set in and I was close to death as I had emergency surgery in 1955. The advances in medicine have been wonderful, but back then I guess this was pretty miraculous that I pulled through that. Gangrene is a bad thing. Until today, I had never really researched it much. Gangrene is the infection that happens when there is no blood flow and tissue dies. The description of gangrene here, whatever it was called 2,000 years ago was probably even more serious than 1955. Gangrene is death.

“Godless Chatter” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.” 2 Timothy 2:16

Paul is quite intolerant of nonsense in general. He doesn’t pull any punches when addressing issues we deal with in the church. Timothy the young pastor must have loved getting his letters and being able to share them with the flock because they dealt with the touchy stuff. Avoid godless chatter is a kind, but direct way of telling people to shut up about a lot of stuff. Godly people shouldn’t be “talking crap” as I shared so eloquently in a recent sermon. Easy to say, not so easy to do. The constant drip and flood of ungodliness is almost unavoidable. We are surrounded by non-stop drivel. This is why we must counter the negative flow with lots of truth, godliness, and biblical principle. Avoidance is an easy task when we want to do it. We are actually quite creative about it. We can avoid people, paying bills, going to church, volunteering, and responsibility like they are the plague. Gossip or juicy stories or worldly media garbage, now that is not so easy. The reason we should avoid it is clear. Like the Word says, we indulge in it. As a matter of fact, we tend to be self-indulging. When we cave into the temptation to listen to godless chatter, we are overcome by it. Just can’t resist it. After all inquiring minds want to know, right? Honestly, it is not about the temptation because we make little or no effort to avoid it. Eventually we have become so immersed in worldliness, you know, worldly talk, worldly opinions, worldly attitudes, and worldly ways that we lose touch with any sense of resistance.

“A Workman Approved By God” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the Word of truth.”" 2 Timothy 2:15

This verse always reminds me of AWANA. AWANA as an acrostic stands for A Workman Approved, Not Ashamed. One of the fundamental principles of having a weekly children’s bible club is the study of God’s Word. We must study, and learn a hunger and appreciation for His Truth. Bible Study must be really hard, because I am convinced very few people really do it. Of course your enemy satan, will do anything to prevent or distract you from being in God’s Word. These words to Timothy to stand before God without excuse or shame about the Kingdom work and study of Scripture, that we are all commanded to do is daunting. I mean, how in the world can you tackle a huge project like reading or studying The Bible? Kinda like you would eat an elephant…. one bite at a time. Like you can consume a bag of chips or M&M’s…. just do it. Or how you can watch endless amounts of sports, news shows, or the famous “I usually only watch Discovery or History or National Geographic programs”. You get me right? We waste plenty of time. What I don’t have a few minutes for, I can’t do if given hours to get it accomplished. This is especially difficult with the world, the flesh, and the devil constantly whispering in my ear that I am just too busy, or overloaded, or tired, or whatever my lame excuse of the day might be. You do it too. So we must discipline ourselves, dedicate time, write devotionals, prepare sermons (I do have a bit of a necessitated advantage I know) but, beyond my job, I have to find even more time in His Word. A commitment is absolutely imperative for my well-being and spiritual growth. Otherwise I flounder and get tied in knots and am frustrated. My shame about my lack of discipline is my problem, no blaming anything or anyone else.

“Quarreling Over Words” Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.” 2 Timothy 2:14b

For Paul to exhort Timothy to warn the people he is teaching ‘before God’ about quarreling about words are strong words in and of themselves. When we give someone a warning as though it comes straight from God it is, or at least should be, very serious. We live in a culture that plays with words, that twists words, and manipulates words constantly. Nothing is as it is said and everything can mean something else.

“Reminders” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Keep reminding them of these things” 2 Timothy 2:14a

I have mixed feelings about reminders. I may actually have some issues with some hypersensitivity to being reminded of certain things. Timothy is reminded by Paul to keep reminding the flock about the things that he has taught. Reminding can be done without sounding like a nagging spouse or parent. Reminding one another in marriage of our love is vital. I am reminded just now of the man whose wife asked if he still loved her. He reminded her that he said so on the day he married her and if it changed he would let her know. Whoa, just a tad insensitive I think. But, at the other extreme to need to be reminded many times per day that you are loved, is a bit much I think. So, what should our attitude be about being reminded? I am sure you know that Jesus loves you. But I love to be reminded of that. Or, to be reminded that someone is there for you is certainly reassuring. On the other hand, to be reminded each day to take out the trash before you have even had a chance to is exasperating, isn’t it? So, how are you about reminders? The positive reminders are encouraging and the ones that point to our forgetfulness are not. We need to be reminded. I too often overreact to being reminded with the equally obnoxious, “I know, I know”. Hmm, I guess it depends on who is speaking and about what, eh? My counsel is to receive reminders graciously and to be careful not to nag about them. Also, be careful not to nag people who nag, they don’t like it either.

“A Trustworthy Saying” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Here is a trustworthy saying, ‘if we died with Him, we will also live with Him; if we endure, we will also reign with Him. If we disown Him, He will also disown us; if we are faithless He will remain faithful for He cannot disown Himself.’” 2 Timothy 2:11-13

This is believed to be an early hymn of the church. Not exactly a totally encouraging praise song. Nor is it an old-fashioned power and glory hymn. These words are very interesting. Slow down and read the words for content. Sing it just like you should during worship on Sunday morning. Try to speak the words like you believe them, like you mean them and like you are saying them to Him and acclaiming His truth with other believers. Try adding a little melody if that would help. I did. This early church hymn is talking to me today. Here are a few things I got from it, the more I sang the more it came to me.

1. Dying is a reality that cannot be avoided.

“Being Other-Centered” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.” 2 Timothy 2:10

Paul would say of this verse that this is what he does now. Even though he is imprisoned and in chains, he now endures with a purpose in mind. He is doing it for others, for believers and for those who are yet to believe. That is who the elect that he speaks of are, they are us. Paul is enduring for us. He is thinking outside his circumstance and beyond his time-frame to the much bigger picture. He knows his days are numbered. He knows that in time his faith will cost him his life. He now lives for others and for the purpose God has called him to, to spread the gospel and to share Jesus Christ with as many as possible. Paul is literally living for Jesus, for His name’s sake. Wow. What a beautiful commitment. Of course he doesn’t always do this perfectly and he struggles with his situation. But, he is always and quickly able to get back to the main point, living for Christ. Everything is about this. He wants to do all he can to make sure everyone else is given the grace he has received. He understands what a precious gift he has received and his sole goal is to share everything and endure everything that can lead to salvation. He would die for any one of us to live forever. What love, what commitment, what endurance, what a focus. He is looking forward and living right now as best he can is a wonderful example for us all. We would do well to consider his dedication and his heart for serving.
The only solution for being self-centered is being other-centered. This convicts me.I know I need to be more other-centered and to resist being self-centered.

“Chained and Not Chained” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s Word is not chained.” 2 Timothy 2:9

Paul’s gospel is two words. Those two words cannot be chained. You can lock Paul up put him in chains, beat him, take away his rights as a Roman citizen, make him suffer, isolate him, treat him like a common criminal, but you cannot chain his two word gospel. It is the same today as it was then. You can attack the Word of God, make fun of Believers, ridicule or mock the church, prosecute pastors for hate speech, and even outlaw being a Christian, but you cannot stop the two word gospel. What are those two words you ask? What words will every knee bow to eventually, what two words are the Alpha and Omega, the hope of all creation? Plain and simple, the two words are Jesus Christ. The Name above all names. The very Son of the Living God. Yes, Jesus Christ, those two words, that person, that Word that became flesh cannot be chained and cannot be stopped. Nothing can stop who He is, what He is and why He came. That is why we need to speak His Name. We must talk to Him and follow Him and spread His Name throughout the whole world. His name is Jesus Christ and long after Paul was done preaching and locked up and put to death because he spoke His Name, we are still talking about His Name today.

Devotion by Church Council Member, Patrice Parker

“I am the way and the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” John 14:6

The context of the passage is the Lord is having a conversation with the disciples and telling them not to be troubled. If you believe in God, believe also in me. That His Father’s house has many rooms, and that He (Jesus) will prepare a place for them and to be prepared to go with Him when He comes back.

That sums it up very succinctly and to the point. If we trust in and follow the Lord we will be with Him and the Father for eternity. Sounds fairly easy when you read it but we all know that sometimes the path that we walk with the Lord can be difficult.

When our path becomes rocky, our lives difficult, and things just seem to be going against what we have planned, we forget that the path that we should be walking is not the one we have planned for ourselves but the one that the Lord has planned for us. It’s easy to think that we are in charge, but the reality is that we are not. We should be asking the Lord to guide us and provide the answer we seek or to lead us to the path we should follow.

“Jesus Christ” Devotion by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David.” 2 Timothy 2: 8

Always, always, always, we must remember Jesus Christ. Paul was reflecting about reflecting in the previous verse and then he says to remember that our focus and our Lord is Jesus Christ. He is central to our faith. He is the head of the Body of Christ. He is the first and last and cornerstone. Sometimes when we reflect we can forget the main thing. We should always be able to get back to basics. To make the main thing the main thing at all times. A good portion of Paul’s audience are converted Jews. They might start to think about Moses or reflect on Psalms or on David. So Paul makes a distinction between David and Jesus. Jesus rose from the dead, He resurrected, David didn’t. Moses didn’t either. Then Paul reminds them that although the Lord Jesus is above all, that He did descend from David’s line. Said perfectly, and so tactful too. God in His Word has a way through the bible authors of revealing His character in how He deals with sensitive subjects. He speaks the truth not only with authority, but out of love. This is not so easy for us to do. We want to lay down the law. The Law gives us room to judge and to exercise power. But, grace and Jesus, they fulfill The Law and The Prophets and the Church Fathers too. Verse 8 puts things into perspective. Christ first and pre-eminent in everything. Even in our wise Old Testament reflecting. Jesus being the only resurrected one means He has the power and the authority. He descended from David because that was His Father’s plan. Everything points to Jesus.

“Reflect” Devotion by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Reflect on what I am saying, for the Lord will give you insight into all this.” 2 Timothy 2:7

Paul has just given a multi-faceted illustration of what it is to serve the Lord. He references examples of soldiers, athletes and farmers. As he closes this illustration he encourages us readers to reflect. So wise. So simple, but so wise. Oh how I wish I would have reflected more before deciding things in my life. Not just reflect, but if necessary retreat and reconsider. When we do, it is how the Lord gives us insight. Step back and as objectively as possible take a look from God’s perspective before you speak, act or even think much further. This is wise. I sense God wants to guide and direct us more, but we speak and act to quickly. Our reflections should also be more about what He says than what we think. It is God who knows what we should do and say. But, we must ask Him for His input and for His counsel.

"THE HARDWORKING FARMER"

"The hardworking farmer should be the first to receive a share of the crops." 2 Timothy 2:6

Farming is a long-term process. When I was about 5 years old or so, I remember cutting potatoes and then with toothpicks suspending them in a jar of water so that they would grow. I checked them every hour, then several times the next day and then daily until I gave up. But, in time they sprouted and grew. Not quick enough for me, but they grew. Oh, they were getting ready to bud and bloom, I just couldn't see it. Seeing was believing. Everything takes time. I once planted carrots and dug them up way too soon; couldn't give it time. My children once were digging in the planter and brought me several tulip bulbs that they had discovered. They didn't even know or understand that those would be flowers if we left them in the fertile ground.
So much is happening by way of the Spirit, in His time that is so hard to wait for. Can you imagine waiting seasons for a harvest? The hardworking farmer gets this. He prepares the soil, plants, lets the water and the sunshine do their work... then he waits.

"ATHLETES"

"Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules." 2 Timothy 2:5

In case you can't relate to the soldier example, how about an athlete? Next verse he will try a farmer. Peter is also trying to be all things to all people, so he might reach a few. Whether a butcher, a baker or a candlestick maker... it is the same. Discipline, obedience, diligence, hard work, endurance, subservience. All are virtues of those who follow and serve Christ.

“YOU DECIDE”

"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." 2 Corinthians 9:7

Giving is an extremely sensitive subject. So much so that I titled this devotional "You Decide" instead of "Giving" or "Cheerful Giving". This is such a rich verse for me. God has been blessing Grace Harbor Church and School beyond measure in recent months, so the timing of this writing is not related to any need. In my life at this time, I am learning much about giving, especially about generosity. It seems I am being freed up to give lately on a level that I have not experienced before. I must share with you because it is blessing me so much, I just have to share. As I reread this particular verse I think I am understanding why. Let me give it to you in a few bullet points.

• My heart for Him is leading me.

"SO BIG" by: Church Council Member, Gabrielle Botts

"Your unfailing love, Oh LORD, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your justice like the ocean depths." Psalm 36:5-6

I love these verses! They show me just how BIG our God is. God is outside of everything in this world that we can see, and everything we can imagine. How often do we try to box God in to what we think He's like, or try to figure God out with our finite minds? It's impossible! Mull over these two small (but mighty!) verses and think about God's infinite love for us.

“A Good Soldier” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets involved in civilian affairs, he wants to please his commanding officer.” 2 Timothy 2:3-4

My commander in chief is Jesus Christ. He is my commanding officer. My deepest desire is to please Him. Sometimes that entails enduring hardship and I should do that like a good soldier, without whining, without sniveling, or complaining. I should do my duty, follow my orders, and conduct myself in such a way as to represent who I am serving. I should stay out of this world’s affairs. At least to the degree that I become part of it more than I am part of His Kingdom work. I cannot sign in and out of my commitment to Christ. I have not been drafted, I enlisted. I signed up for a lifelong tour of duty. When I was bought by the blood of Christ, I relinquished my rights to do as I pleased without consideration of my commander. I know this language sounds so serious. So is our commitment to Christ. Or at least it should be.

“Be Strong” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others.” 2 Timothy 2-1-2

When we slow down the study of Scripture, even when we are making it into a devotional, there is so much that can be learned. Paul is so tenderhearted and personal with Timothy. Calls him son and encourages him to be strong. Strong in the grace of Christ Jesus. Wow, that is deeper strength. He then tells Timothy to teach the things that he has taught to many. Not every word he has ever said in passing, but the things he has preached when sharing the gospel. These things we should entrust to others who can then teach them to others. Teachers of the Word should teach others so they can teach. Sharers of the gospel should share with others so they can share. Lovers of the Word should share that love with others so they in turn can share the love of The Word with others. This is how the gospel is spread. This is how we remain strong. Teach, share and spread His Word, by His grace and also by His Word. God used many to entrust His Word to me. Pastors, authors, mentors and friends have entrusted truth to me and I now share it with you, so you will share it with others. Encourage others to be strong. The things of the faith that we share together as the family of God, these things now share with everyone.

“A Refreshing Friend in Christ” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“May the Lord show mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, because he often refreshed me and was not shamed of my chains. On the contrary, when he was in Rome, he searched hard for me until he found me. May the Lord grant that he will find mercy from the lord on the day! You know very well in how many ways he helped me in Ephesus.” 2 Timothy 1:16-18

There are some especially refreshing people in our lives. They often add help and hope. As a matter of fact they are a wonderful blessing at just the right time.

“Being Deserted” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“You know that everyone in the province of Asia has deserted me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.” 2 Timothy 1:15

I never say always. Although I must admit that hyperbole is sometimes effective. Similarly, “Nobody likes me”, can be understood to be a bit of an exaggeration. Obviously not everybody in Asia deserted Paul. By desertion he is not referring necessarily to physical desertion but a desertion in the faith. In upcoming verses he refers to others that were an amazing blessing to him. But for the sake of effect here he states that the whole ministry in Asia has deserted the faith. At least it felt like it. I know this feeling. At times in my ministry over the years I have felt that awful feeling. In my youth ministry, or even when pastoring a church, or simply a big plan was going down the tubes and I felt like all was lost and that the whole ministry was at risk or seemingly doomed. Although not completely true, in some cases it was the beginning of the end of what we hoped would be. I think we can all relate. That being said, Paul specifically mentions Phygelus and Hermogenes, and guaranteed they did desert him, probably in every way imaginable. This too is painful in the work of the Lord. When individuals leave the ministry it is hard to swallow. Necessary sometimes but nonetheless not easy to face or bear. Imagine how this feels when you are in prison as Paul was. He couldn’t do a thing about it. Prior to mass communication or any social media, Paul could only express his angst in a slow moving letter. This was no doubt cause for a lot of sleepless nights and tears. He took this desertion personally. I am sure he went through a lot of soul searching and replaying of the events that changed the ministry in Asia. How sad. But, the gospel is in the hand of the Lord ultimately, and Paul knows this. Though he shares this difficult personal downturn in his life, he rebounds to faith in coming verses. This is how real life is. We have these times of very harsh reality accompanied with spates of a sense of failure. Indeed not easy. But, when serving the Lord, you roll with it. Because He is in charge and He has the plan and He is able, even when people desert you and it feels like maybe everybody has. Our reliance must remain in the Lord and Him alone. Regardless of our circumstance, He is still on the throne.

“Guard me Holy Spirit” by: Pastor Fred Snider

“Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you- guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.” 2 Timothy 1:14

Ok, can we please stop asking whether the Holy Spirit is a person and whether or not He lives in us? I think this passage makes that obvious. Paul is pretty clear here that we need to be on guard and that infers that we are under attack. The reality of spiritual warfare in our lives is grossly under-taught. We really should put more emphasis on the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The deposit spoken of here is our promise of salvation, and our enemy, the devil, seeks to steal our joy and His purpose in this earthly life. We have been entrusted by God through Christ and sealed by the Holy Spirit into an eternal relationship with our Creator that has already begun now. So the spiritual warfare is here and now. We must be very careful not to be overcome by this world. Our nature is corrupted and even once we come to Christ we are still weak. Only through Him and with the help of the Holy Spirit can we resist the attacks of satan. The best way for this guarding to take place is to be ever-conscious of the battle. Also, often think and speak to the fact that the Holy Spirit is in us. If I remain constantly aware of the Holy Spirit in me I think I will be better guarded. First, value what is deposited in me then protect it with the help of the Holy Spirit. It is not enough just to believe in God or to know Jesus. We must appropriate the empowering of the Holy Spirit. Be aware of His work in us. Familiarize ourselves with His protection and power, His revealing of His Word and His gifting of us. We have much to learn about this facet of our spiritual development. Seek with me to learn more of the work of the Holy Spirit.

"The Pattern" Devotion by Pastor Fred Snider

“What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.” 2 Timothy 1:13

Paul is such an amazing teacher. Here he is so tactful in encouraging discipleship by suggesting adherence to his teaching and understanding of the gospel, but making sure to also season that with faith and love in Christ Jesus. The human tendency to become legalistic is so strong. We are attracted to a desire to have everything be so exact so we can judge. Of course at the other end of the spectrum is the desire to not have anything exact so we can do exactly how we please. Oh how to find balance.

HAS AMERICA TURNED IT’S BACK ON GOD? by: Church Council Member, Ron Hodge

On July 7, I received the following email from Franklin Graham:
On June 26, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states. “This is a defining moment for our nation”. Sin not only reigns but is now celebrated. Even the White House was proudly illuminated with rainbow colors the night of the ruling! This is a slap in the face of every Christian and it is only the tip of the iceberg. The rainbow is a promise from God, not a description of a lifestyle. “Long before our government came into existence, marriage was created by Almighty God—the One who created man and woman. He is clear about the definition of marriage in His Holy Word: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Genesis 2:24, ESV).

In the New Testament, Jesus reiterated God’s definition of marriage: “From the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife’” (Mark 10:6–7).
The court did not define marriage, and therefore it is not entitled to redefine it.

“SUFFERING WITHOUT SHAME”

"That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him for that day." 2 Timothy 1:12

This is one of my very favorite verses, some of which is quoted as the chorus in a hymn from my youth that brings back quite a few memories. Paul is suffering not only because he is imprisoned, it is also just honestly difficult to represent the faith constantly or consistently. He doesn't want his imprisonment to discourage anyone, yet he wants to be real about his faith and circumstances. So he is not ashamed of his predicament because he is serving the Lord even though in chains. His words that explain why are simply beautiful. Let me list a few observations about how Paul turns his tough situation into a blessing.

1. What he knows trumps how he feels.

GOD'S TRACK RECORD by: Suzanne Teuben, Director High School Ministry

"So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, 'On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided. Genesis 22:14

This verse comes from the story of God testing Abraham in his faithfulness to God. God asked Abraham to take his son up to the mountains and sacrifice his one and only son, Isaac. I encourage you to read the whole chapter and notice that Moses does not mention how Abraham was feeling or what He was thinking as Isaac carried the wood he was about to be burned on. It seems like a cruel test to me but I think more than anything it shows the faith of a humble servant of the Lord and his complete trust in the Lord, no matter how crazy the request.

“Appointed”

“And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.” 2 Timothy 1:11

So personal for Paul to share this. The gospel, which is our hope and our calling, is central to our faith too. Paul knew he had been chosen, appointed by God for a specific purpose. We can know this too. No, God isn’t still appointing Apostles, but He is calling disciples. Apostles are those who have seen Him and were set apart specifically to initiate the spread of the gospel after Jesus ascended. Disciples are His followers ever since. For over two thousand years people have been responding to God’s call upon their lives. I have been called and so have you. I am confident that God has specific plans for your life that can be discovered through prayer, study of His word, serving Him and empowerment from the Holy Spirit. We all have at least one gift to serve Him with. There are lists of gifts in Paul’s letters, but I believe He Himself would want to reveal to you, through seeking Him earnestly, or being mentored or setting aside a season to deepen your faith and pursuing His heart for you. Maybe your biggest question may be… “What if He wants me to do something I don’t want to do?” I would say to you that is probably the enemy dissuading you before you even know what He has in mind.
I once said to Him sincerely… “Whatever, wherever!” So I am here until He says differently.

God’s Dwelling Place #10 by: Suzanne Teuben, Director of High School Ministry

“In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by His Spirit.” Ephesians 2:21-22

So where is the tabernacle now, the place where God chooses to dwell and bring glory to His name? The answer is found in the verse above: you and me as followers of Christ! In my opinion, the Holy Spirit is often underrated and under-appreciated. Let’s recall the words of Jesus recorded in John 16:7, “But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you: but if I go, I will send Him to you.” Jesus told His disciples that it was a good thing for Him to leave this earth. How could it possibly be a good thing for Jesus to leave their presence? Because He was sending someone in His place, the Holy Spirit. Jesus was fully God and fully human in His incarnate body, whereas the Holy Spirit is fully God and without the constraints of a physical body. The Holy Spirit is capable of being with you and me 24/7, despite any physical distance between us.

“Death Destroyed”

“This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.” 2 Timothy 1:10

Strange devotional title huh? How can death be destroyed when we so often think of it as our destruction? Living forever or eternal life, here referred to as immortality, is such an unfathomable gift from God. We indeed are going to live forever, all of us, believers or not. The body goes through a physical death, but our souls live forever, one place or the other. Aha, there is the grace, the gospel and the good news. God’s plan has been for redemption since before time. Jesus coming to earth in the flesh is the beginning of His victory over death. On the cross when He becomes the atonement, or perfect sacrifice, for sin, Jesus conquers death, utterly destroys its power by His resurrection. Death is disempowered because He proves that, like He, it is not the end of us. He replaced death with life. In essence, we go from having a death sentence to having an eternal life gift; unless, of course, you don’t accept that gift thereby choosing an eternal death sentence. Jesus shines a revealing light on our fate and His wonderful plan for us. That is good news. Breathe deep. Let that soak in. We are not only gonna be O.K., we are gonna be O.K. forever.
