"GREED"

"Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions." Luke 12:15 (NASB)

How will we ever be satisfied or fulfilled when we never seem to have enough? Not just things and money either. Not enough time, energy, peace, happiness, hope, love, support, affirmation, respect, etc. etc. I could go on and on. I know what my three are. How about you? We want more because we are selfish, self-focused, and self-indulged. Our expectations for self-fulfillment and satisfaction leave us wanting and needy. We who have so much want more and more. There is never enough. We live in a world where three things are primarily stealing our joy and we pretend we don’t see it.

Who We Are!

“For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:10

We not only learn from the Word of God by what it says, but also by what it does not say. First of all, this verse makes it clear that it is God who gives life, He creates each individual and we in effect are unique masterpieces. This, in and of itself is a bit overwhelming and humbling. I think everybody wonders why they are here at some juncture. What is our purpose? Are we just random whimsical notions of a distant Supreme being battling boredom? Do we have a distinct purpose, a reason, a task or goal for our lives? Because of “free will” we have a choice as to how or whether we respond. But, what did God have in mind as he grants us life? This verse does not say that we were created in Christ Jesus to attain success or fame or wealth or even freedom. It does not say we were made to find happiness or satisfaction. What it says is we were created to do good works. I shouldn’t need to tell you essentially what “good works” are. We all know. As we often say, “It is not about us, right?”

"Look For Jesus In Your Trials"

"In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith, of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, many be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."
1 Peter 1:6-7

Previous verses explain that what we rejoice in is our salvation. These verses remind us that though our eternal reward is wonderful, this life brings any number of trials and a fair share of grief. The purpose of our earthly suffering is refinement. We need it. We must have our faith tested and tried, because that way we understand the deeper value of what we have. We go through the fire and we come out purer and truer and more genuine.

Be A Light

"You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven" Matthew 5:14-16
Another year is coming to an end. The older I get the faster they seem to fly by. This year was full of challenges, joy, love, family, friends, loss, grief and grandkids.

God Came Near

"His kingdom will never end" Luke 1:33

This devotion is taken from a devotional book I have been reading each morning, "Grace For The Moment, Volume II" by Max Lucado. I found this so precious that I wanted to share it with you, on Christmas day.

Oh Come All Ye Faithful

""And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary, His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh."" Matthew 2:11
A lot of Christian songs have stories. Even the Christmas Carols. John Francis Wade wrote "O Come All Ye Faithful" in 1743. Under persecution he had fled England as streams of other Catholics did, to France and Portugal. At age 32 he produced a copy of a Latin Christmas carol beginning with the phrase "Adeste Fidelis, Laeti triumphantes." Seven original hand-copied manuscripts of this Latin hymn have been found, all of them bearing Wade's signature. He was a renowned copyist of musical scores. As Catholics returned to Britain after Wade had passed away they brought his beloved hymn with them. Another Catholic, an Anglican convert, by the name of Rev. Frederick Oakeley came across the Latin version and after several awkward attempts finally, in 1845, translated more accurately into English, the opening phrase as "O come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant." This caught on quickly and spread as a favorite among Protestants and Catholics.

Our Inheritance

"..an inheritance that can never perish spoil or fade---kept in heaven for you."
1 Peter 1:4

The preceding verse tells us that the gift of new birth in Christ is this inheritance. I have never received any kind of inheritance other than the spiritual kind and probably won't, but I wouldn't trade my eternal reward for all the money in the world. You see, in my life I have been in plenty (at least by my standards) and in want (again by my standards).

An Open Letter to All Christians, from John C. Adams III

"[BIBLE VERSE]" [REFERENCE]

AN OPEN LETTER TO ALL CHRISTIANS: Therefore, I encourage all Christians this year (and from now on) to openly, lovingly and joyfully celebrate Christmas and enjoy a Merry and Blessed Christmas, share it enthusiastically with others, sharing the real reason why we celebrate this glorious and wonderful Holy Day (from which the word "Holiday" was derived); which God's angels proclaimed as "...Good News of Great Joy to All People. Today in the town of David (Bethlehem) a Savior has been born to you; He is Christ the Lord!" (Luke 2:10-11)

A Living Hope

"Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead." 1 Peter 1:3

Peter knows what he is talking about. Not only because he is being led of the Holy Spirit as he writes his epistle, but because from personal experience he knows what it is like to feel "dead", to feel "done", to feel "hopeless". As I read Peter's general epistle to us all I have to remind myself that this is also the man that was overly exuberant, zealous to a fault and at the other end of the spectrum denied Christ, ran away, quit and practically could not go on.

The Gift of Love

"But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved." Ephesians 2:4-5
This Sunday, the last Sunday of Advent, Pastor Fred will be teaching on love, referencing one of the most frequently quoted passages of Scripture, John 3:16-17--"For God so loved the world that he gave is one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him."

Who We Are

"To God's elect, strangers in the world, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia and Bithynia, who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and sprinkling by His blood: Grace and peace be yours in abundance." 1 Peter 1:1-2

In the opening words of Peter's epistle to all of us, he uses some fascinating words to describe who we are in Christ Jesus. Between the places that are not easy to pronounce, and Peter's rather 'over the top' proclamation to introduce his epistle, there are some key clues to our identity as believers. Let me pick them out and list them so we can be encouraged about who we are. We are God's elect, chosen, foreknown-this is very well said when referenced to passages about predestination.

Woe to Those

"Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees, to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey." Isaiah 10:1-2

Again and again in the Word of God, He refers to a certain group of people that He defends, upholds and cares about deeply. They are the poor, the oppressed and widows. Not mentioned in this passage but often included in passages like are also orphans and prisoners. God has a special disdain for those who oppress the poor, who put their boot on the oppressed and who prey upon widows and lack compassion for orphans and prisoners.

For Unto Us a Child Is Born

"For to us a Child is born, to us a Son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders and He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." Isaiah 9:6

We recognize these words from Handel's Messiah, from Christmas programs and Christmas cards. Of course it is prophecy about the coming Messiah. Today you probably need Him specifically by one of the names that He is referred to in Isaiah 9. As our devotional I am going to ask you to consider them all, then allow yourself to focus on one. I will make a list and you and He will do the rest. He will be there for you. He will meet you how you need Him. He is like that. So, again, how do you need Him today?

This People

"The Lord spoke to me with His strong hand upon me, warning me not to follow the way of this people." Isaiah 8:11
This passage is specifically referring to the Assyrians. As I read Isaiah 8 again and again, I could not help but think that the Assyrians represent the way of this world. This people as verse 8 refers to them, are fascinated and swayed by this world. They believe in conspiracies, they seek out mediums and spiritists, they have rejected the Only One True God and have sought the gods of this world. Why? Because they do not like what God says so they invent ways to do as they please.

Jesus is the Reason for the Season, by Ron Hodge

"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. " Matthew 10:32

It amazes me that every religion can openly celebrate their religion except for Christians. We can’t even celebrate our Savior’s birth in the open market or public place anymore. We can’t say Merry Christmas anymore because it might offend someone. I guess our feelings don’t matter. Merchants want to have the Christmas business, but don’t even mention Jesus or Christmas. Everything is happy holidays, season’s greetings and Santa Claus. The more our society needs Jesus, the more any mention of Him is suppressed. When was the last time you heard a politician or government leader mention God or Jesus? No wonder our country is in such bad shape; without God we will always have moral decay, division and turmoil. I just saw on the internet, a bill board from an atheist group stating “Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is to skip church. I’m too old for fairy tales”. Let’s not let that happen this year. Mention Jesus every chance you get. When someone says Happy Holiday, just say “It’s okay to say Merry Christmas. I’m a Christian.” Remember, sometimes just giving someone a little time and love means so much more than a gift.

Standing Firm

"If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all." Isaiah 7:9

The Bible is not to be read like a fortune cookie. As tempting as it is to take the sweet platitudes of scripture and make them our mantra for the day, we really should study the Word and understand its context. Most verses are not taken out of context by most believers, but some are and it trivializes the Word of God. In the preceding verses God is promising protection for His people. He then states the way it will be instead of the way they think it will be and closes with these encouraging words, "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all." These words stand in principle on their own. It is true that we cannot stand without Him and we must trust Him to keep standing, especially when things are stacked against us.

Here Come Da Judge!

"The Lord takes His place in court; He rises to judge the people." Isaiah 3:3

Some of you will remember the phrase that is the title of the devotion. It was a comic spoof from the old “Laugh In” T.V. show that parodied the legal process with a silly judge character. Sometimes the legal system is mocked and the judicial process is made fun of, or even disrespected, but when God as judge takes His place in the court of judgment, it is guaranteed that justice will roll down.

The Arrogance of Man

"The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled; the LORD alone will be exalted in that day, and the idols will totally disappear. " Isaiah 2:17-18

I continue to read Isaiah. In chapter 2, God speaks through Isaiah about The Day of the Lord. You know eventually God is going to bring everyone to their knees. I am often shocked by the arrogance of man. Not because I stand in judgment of anyone, but He can. I recognize it from experience with my own arrogance. I fight the pride battle like all of us. If you totally strip away all my worldly idols and poke a hole in my puffed up attitudes, my humility is far more genuine. I sometimes battle false pride and insincere humility. But, it is the Lord alone who sees through me and I exalt Him and have to literally get on my knees before Him and keep things in perspective. I am so grateful for His grace. It allows me to serve with any shred of dignity. I indeed, with Paul, see myself as the chief of sinners and with Isaiah; I too, am a man of unclean lips. I can be equally lazy and ambitious and should replace that with true rest and holy zeal. My heart is glad to be hardest on myself. God, uses me, I am your servant. I rejoice in your anew.

Forgive as the Lord Forgave You

"Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you." Colossians 3:13
Sometimes it is good to begin with the ending of a verse and then go back and try to understand more by rereading the passage many times. The directive that Paul is giving us from the Lord is simple. Forgive. Period. It is our duty and responsibility to forgive. It is a sin not to forgive. We know what forgive means. It means to let it go. It means to put it in the past. It means to get over it. How did Jesus forgive us? He died forgiving us. He bled forgiving us. He suffered forgiving us. He bore our sin forgiving us. He bore not only our sin, but every sin of everybody else forgiving us all. He actually died for the sins of others that hurt me personally. I must forgive or I am doomed to be bitter, limited, trapped and unfulfilled. Unforgiveness is the sin that cripples the church today. So many folks have left churches without forgiving. So many believers have put a happy face band aid over the sins that others have hurt them with and are pretending that everything is just fine. It isn't fine. It is why we are dysfunctional. It is why we are prone to repeating our errors. It is why we are swapping sheep between churches. It is why we don't enjoy church as much as we should. Now let us go back to the beginning of the verse and highlight some words.

Well Done, Thy Good And Faithful Servant

As 1 write today for Friday's devotional, I do so with much sadness in my heart, but at the same time with a sense of peace. You might think that this sounds like a contradiction of terms, but for many of you who will be reading this devotional, I think that you know exactly what I am talking about, or better yet, who. Who indeed, but Lahoma. In trying to decide on the "most perfect" verse that would be fitting for Lahoma, I gave up after finding it almost impossible to pick one from the hundreds that all seemed to be just right. But, I finally decided on the one that we hear so often because the words do describe best the life that Lahoma lived. "Well done, thy good and faithful servant: Matthew 25:21. And all of God's people and ALL THOSE WHO LOVED AND LOVE Lahoma say "Amen." If 1 tried to go through and list all of the ways and deeds that Lahoma faithfully performed in His name, and for His glory, there would not be enough space to do so in this short devotional. However, just a few come to mind that we all were privileged to be a part of — Women's Bible Study ( she made the Bible scriptures come alive); Team 413 (people who never walked or ran more than a mile, or at all, were convinced by her that they could run or walk half or full marathons); Missions (she took it literally to spread the Good News to all parts of the world, not just California); Praise and Worship Team (she lifted her strong Soprano voice at every opportunity); Church Council (sharing of her gifted leadership skills); Mentor (there are so many young women who were blessed by her guidance); Artist of the Most High God (how many God-inspired murals, art projects at our Church come to mind); Teen Challenge - Los Angeles (she really did believe that every person has value), etc, etc., etc.

Say What?”

"He said, "God and tell this people: 'Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving. Make the heart of this people calloused: make their ears dull and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed." Isaiah 6:9-10

This is what God says to Isaiah after Isaiah says, "Here am I, send me." This is the message from God to Isaiah's people and also to us. Isaiah had confessed that he himself was a man of unclean lips and served a people of unclean lips. God symbolically touches his mouth with a live coal from the altar to purify Isaiah so his guilt was removed and his sin was atoned for. What does the message from God in verses 9 and 10 mean? There is a religiosity, a phony spirituality that we are capable of particularly when we have 'heard it all before', and when we are bored with His teaching that causes a callousness or hardening of our hearts toward God. We listen, but we don't take it in, we see it, but we don't wrap our minds around it. After we start to get calloused, we then start to get deaf and sleepy.

Values Clarification

"Woe to those who call evil good and good evil. Who put darkness for light and light for darkness. Who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter." Isaiah 5:20

I could write a book about this. What an indictment from God. Oh how we have fallen in this trap again and again since the garden. Satan tempted humans from the beginning to question God’s Word, His values, and His motives for setting boundaries. Today, we suffer from a rash of twisted justification and redefinitions. As innocent hip jargon meanings such as: “sick”, “outrageous,” and “bitchin”, to the totally misleading wonderful terms such as “pro-choice”, “universal health care”, and “mercy killing” for example, it’s no wonder we are confused, bewildered, and unclear about so many things.

Shelter, Shade and Refuge

"It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of day, and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain." Isaiah 4:6

In Isaiah 4, we are reminded of the Lord’s provision and guidance. He provides and guides. I love the four terms used to describe His glorious canopy of care. Shelter, shade, refuge, and hiding place. For me, these words mean something particular; maybe to you, too. Today a passage like this blesses me because of where my head and heart are at, responding to all that is going on around me. I’ll share my reflections and hopefully they will bless you, or you will receive something particular from the Lord for you.

The Savior of the World

"We have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world." 1 John 4:14

I so want to catch the infectious spirit of the early believers again in my life. You do know of course, that we too have seen and testify that the Father has indeed sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. Isn't that what the world needs? Doesn't it need to be saved? Doesn't it need to be rescued? Isn't the world in peril? It certainly is. More importantly to God, every individual on the face of the earth needs to be redeemed. Why isn't that the most important thing?

Stop Doing Wrong

"Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow." Isaiah 1:17

I am reading Isaiah again. WOW! Great stuff. So thought provoking and deep. Much to consider. It is Saturday morning, which means I am here at the church for the Neighborhood Food Ministry. This outreach is growing again. As I sit in my car with the door open, many people have come by today to thank us for allowing this to happen here. One woman spoke of her son that she gets food for. She has been unemployed since 2011. She is 61 years old and in poor health, herself. A single mom since the 80’s, she raised her kids alone after their father abandoned them. She is trying to get by and help her adult children too, especially her son who is 30. He took the disappearance of his dad the hardest. He is now divorced, unemployed, and working part-time jobs. Mom goes to Calvary Chapel, Costa Mesa since she came to Christ 40 years ago.

The Three R’s

"Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy, He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Christ Jesus our Savior." Titus 3:5-6 NKJ

I want to know and understand the basics of my salvation according to His Word. This passage explains it simply. Back in the day, the basics of education were referred to as the three “R’s” : Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic. Obviously, that is actually an “R”, a “W”, and an “A”, but they all have an “R” sound in them. Basic education has gotten very far away from the basics and so has the basic understanding of our salvation. The three “R’s” in the passage are righteousness, regenerating, and renewing. Let me share the basic understands about these terms.

Proverbs About Foolishness - Part 15

So, finally I share the last devotional about foolishness. I’m ready to move on. Hope you have learned something about you, and not just a bunch of stuff about me. I really try to be pretty transparent and to keep it real. But, this 15 part expose` of my lesser self has been exhausting. Funny how looking at yourself sure gets your eyes off everyone else.

Proverbs About Foolishness - Part 14

As Solomon shares about foolishness in the latter chapters of Proverbs, he makes sure to cover some things that should either be reiterated or addressed anew. Often, a fool makes his error either by speaking or by not listening, specifically speaking instead of listening. That is probably why when we are “pent up” we tend to lash out and make bigger problems. I know I do. “Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me.”

Proverbs About Foolishness - Part 13

Only a few more devotionals about foolishness. This has not been an easy task to reflect personally on each one. It has been pretty self-revealing to say the least. As encouraged as I was by the Proverbs about righteousness, I have been humbled by these about foolishness. Foolishness is not a pass or fail test, it is also not graded on the curve. It is only measured by grace, mercy and discipline.

Proverbs About Foolishness - Part 12

Aren’t we almost done with all of these “foolish” Proverbs? It seems as though we have a lot to learn about foolishness. We probably are more learned about foolishness than we would like to admit.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 11

You know the saying, “The truth hurts.” In my life I receive a lot of appreciation and not much criticism. I work on that ratio probably to a fault. I think I am too dependent on approval and rock the boat too little. As a leader I tend to seek more consensus than I need and let far too many little things slide by without needed input. My avoidance of conflict has led to more stress than confronting concerns. I want to change this.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 10

I must admit again that these devotionals on foolishness have been more convicting than I first thought. This reminds me of the old literary phrase… “Little did he think.” I should think more and deeper, especially before speaking or leaping. I pray that the Lord would open the eyes of my heart, so I could see Him, and see clearer in general. Hard to do that when I start thinking it is about me. Create in me a clean heart Oh God.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 9

I am a student of life. I have learned the hard way and I have avoided many troubles by learning from other’s mistakes and from heeding counsel. Some of the counsel I give comes from the school of hard knocks, some from watching the mistakes of others unfold. Much of my counsel comes from His Word and those who understand His Word. I don’t know as much as I used to, but am getting wiser about it.

Faith is like WiFi, it's invisible but has the power to connect you to what you need.

"Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from The Lord. For we live by faith, not by sight" 2 Corinthians 5:7

Just this past Sunday the women's choir sang a beautiful song during our worship time. "Bow the "Knee". As I was practicing with the choir and singing the song over and over to myself in the car, one particular line kept running around in my head. "We live by faith, not by sight". I wondered if that came from the bible. Remember I am the newbie, I haven't read the entire book. So I googled the line and well I found a lot to read. Actually an enormous amount of information. One commentary went so far as to say that it was the most researched and written about passages in Paul's writings.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 8

I have said before that I was raised by Ward and June Cleaver (The parents on “Leave it to Beaver”). We were the iconic family of the 50’s. What a joy and privilege to have lived back then as a little boy. There was a magical innocence to the decade. Truman and Eisenhower were my childhood presidents. TV was new and we were not at war. There was wider acceptance of right and wrong from the biblical perspective and it was easier to identify foolishness.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 7

We all should marvel at the wisdom of Solomon that was a gift of God. Abraham Lincoln paraphrased a proverb once and is quoted as saying, “It is better to be quiet and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.” This is a hybrid of several pieces of proverbial wisdom and certainly true. Lincoln was a wise president, and under extreme duress, remained true to his beliefs and principles.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 6

We should only be introspective in the light of His grace. I would never recommend taking a long hard look at yourself without being in His presence. Only by His grace and mercy can I share my weakness, rebellion and laziness. So when I sing “Oh how he loves us,” I feel it deeply, because I know I don’t deserve it. But, He paid my price so I can give Him glory. In my weakness He glorifies Himself by restoring me and strengthening me, even at my lowest moments. I can rise in Him and experience righteousness, though my old sin nature keeps trying to pull me down. Now, another five insights and reflections.

Reach One More For Jesus

Our Friday Devotion comes to us from Member, Gerry Mouzis:

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" Matt. 28:19-20 (NIV)

This past week, I received a copy of a Face Book post from Pastor Rick Warren, senior pastor of Saddleback Church. It is entitled Why I Do What I Do—The Theme of My Life. I am not a social media guy but, for those of you who are, I strongly suggest you read the entire post. I had heard the story many years ago. This time, however, I was so moved by the story that I was reminded of the Great Commission and our obligations to fulfill that commission.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 5

Can you imagine what the world would be like if all the fools repented at once? A better place. Oh how much drama and trouble our foolishness causes. We are the heart of our own problems. I am responsible for all my trouble, most of it self-inflicted or, if not, brought on by how poorly I handle other’s shortcomings. Let’s be honest, we can be extremely selfish, self-serving, smug and scurrilous. No wonder we need a Savior. I try to be transparent, but I still fall into the trap of fooling myself, even though I know I can’t fool God. Here are 5 more gems to consider and my humble reflections.

Proverbs about Foolishness - Part 4

My reflections on our foolishness continue. As I consider my folly over the years, I am reminded of two things. First, that horrible feeling that happens when you must admit you have messed up. Second, that subsequent rush of conscience that happens when you realize how you could have avoided messing up in the first place. Here are five more reminders of our humanness. Thank God for His grace. The character of fools is too familiar eh?

About Hearing God Speak by Angie Wahl

Sometimes people share profound statements with you that stay with you and affect you so much that they seemingly come to mind again, and again. It is like you can’t get them out of your head and you know they must be shared. Recently Angie Wahl, our V.B.S. Director, Choir Leader, and our Marketing Coordinator shared such a statement with me. I asked her to frame the words in a devotional, and now here it is for you to think about. Very well said, and extremely profound.
Enjoy!

Proverbs about the Character of Fools - Part 3

Oh how honest reflection promotes humility. These Proverbs about foolishness are fuel for soul-searching. Of course a few things I have been reminded about me I haven’t shared with you, I have confessed to the Lord. How grateful I am for His grace and unconditional love. How appreciative I am of you who read this, that you respect my candor and honesty more than you jump to categorizing me. Let us see one another not only honestly, but through His lens of mercy. Here are 5 more Proverbs and 5 reflections.

Proverbs about the Character of Fools - Part 2

I have decided to personally reflect on each of these Proverbs for two reasons. One, it gives me some parameters of what I can say for the next 14 devotionals. Two, it keeps everyone from guessing who I am talking about. The Bible works best as a mirror, not a magnifying glass. I am working on the specks and logs in my eyes, you can work on yours. If you are like me, so be it. If better or worse, so be that too. But, we will all let God be the judge. I may miss some of my faults and weaknesses as will you. Let us try to keep it real and learn and grow together. Here are the next 5 Proverbs about the character of fools.

Proverbs about the Character of Fools - Part 1

As convicting as the Proverbs about our righteousness were, of equal conviction will the 55+ Proverbs about foolishness be. The wisest thing I’ve ever done was to surrender my heart to Christ. This fool needed to do that. Ever since, I have been a work in progress. Lord, please help me to keep progressing and to live by grace in humility, and yet be empowered to serve you. My accountability to Him is reflected in my character. My character is the basis for my reputation. My reputation affects my witness. My witness is my purpose. My purpose is to reflect Him. I must be aware of my old sin nature at all times, so I can avoid foolishness. Here are the first five proverbs about the character of fools.

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 13

This is the last of the 13 devotionals on “The Blessings of the Righteous”. Writing these has greatly blessed me and opened up fresh faith for me. I see my position in Christ affecting my choices, feelings and reactions more and more. I hope you too have seen this freshness in your life. Just considering righteousness should not make us feel so self-conscious that we miss His blessings. I cannot dwell on my failures, shortcomings and weaknesses. I must snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, not snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Christ has won our battle. We are free in Him; we are His joy, despite our “humanness”. Keep your eyes on Him and Look up. Here are the final 4 verses from Proverbs about our blessings. Enjoy and receive.

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 12

The blessings of the righteous are many. We should count our blessings often. In this life we have three choices… obedience, rebellion or carnality. Or put another way, we can be spiritually grace-oriented, or lost or saved, yet weighed down with this world and its temptations, hopelessness and worldliness. That is why we must constantly remind ourselves of who we are and whose we are. I have put this in other devotionals and it bears repeating. We must be conscious of our position in Christ. Be in Him.

A Big Smile...

"One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake." Luke 8:28

Jesus asked his disciples to “go over to the other side” of the lake. The Sea of Galilee was subject to fierce winds and sudden violent storms that came without notice. Consequently, most boats would hug the shoreline so the crews could reach land quickly if a storm came up. The disciples were asked to take a risk; they were justifiably afraid. They might have refused to go. Nonetheless, they were willing to go over to the other side and get out of their comfort zone. Because they were willing to take a risk, we have this wonderful story of God’s miraculous intervention.

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 11

I often remind myself that righteousness is living my life based on the blessings of God, given to me because of my position in Christ Jesus. I am forgiven and a child of God who has received grace not from my own doing but because of what Christ did. My righteousness is only in Him. His righteousness has been imputed to me.

Blessings of the Righteous - Part 10

The fact is, as Scripture says, “the rain falls on the just and the unjust.” True. We live in a broken, sinful and fallen world. Bad things happen to good people. Life can seem unfair. Those facts do not change the truth of God’s blessings on the righteous. When I count my blessings I often consider all the things I have been protected from that I don’t even know. God is with us and for us constantly. He loves us.

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 9

Some days are more action plan days and some are mere reflection days. Whatever day it is, you still must do what you must do. Even on action plan days, I must reflect and on reflection days, I must act. Today is Friday, my scheduled day off. This afternoon and this evening I plan to celebrate my wife’s birthday with her at dinner and a movie. Early this morning I attended a church/school administration meeting. I am now at the coast writing. Salt air and ocean sounds help me reflect. It is always a good day to consider His Word. So, I will write this devotion, again reflecting on 5 proverbs that speak of the blessings of the righteous.

The Blessings of Righteousness - Part 8

The more I read the 60+ Proverbs that can be categorized as the Blessings of Righteousness, the more I am personalizing them. I am finding them to serve as positive reinforcement for what I am and should be doing, and not indictments of my shortcomings. I am greatly encouraged by the number of times I am reminded of what God has done, is doing, and will do in my life according to His Word. In this set of five I cannot help but bring some reflection on what they mean to me. I, like you do not live perfectly, nor do I handle every situation in my life well. But, I do believe in His Word and am a work in progress. I am making progress over time, and I am blessed to say at least by His never failing grace and mercy to me and to us. I believe that my Lord is at work in me, and in all of us who are in Him. He is in us, He is living and active, as is His Word.
Let me share 5 things I believe from these blessings.

Hope for a Mess Up like Me

"And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, "I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will."" Acts 13:22

I mess up all the time. As a husband and as a parent, I make lots of mistakes. As a friend, I fall short. As a worker, I don't always live up to expectations. And as a Christian, one who hopes to be more and more like Christ, I leave much to be desired on a daily basis. Maybe you are like me, and perhaps you ask yourself the same nagging question that I struggle with. How can God use someone as flawed as I am for His divine purposes? Well, let me tell you, friends, there is HOPE!

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 7

Some of the blessings are intangible, some even mystical. They are deep and cause us to search our souls. I just now encouraged someone who lost their mother. She felt support and strength from her Christian friends. Even at a distance, she knew they cared and were there for her at this difficult time. It is part of who we are. We should be able to feed off one another’s righteousness. We should be connected at our sore and know that “the just live by faith” and that we trust Him to get us through it all not only as an individual believer, but together. When one hurts we all hurt, when one rejoices, we all rejoice. We share pain and loss, victory and blessings. We are the Body of Christ. There is something righteous in the corporate sense of that. There is power and hope. We are not alone in our righteousness or our unrighteousness. Isn’t that comforting?

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 6

As we continue hearing the blessings of the righteous, the question could cross our minds that asks, “So the life of the righteous is always smooth, easy and trouble free, right?” Wrong! While it is true that we are blessed beyond measure, we still live in a broken, sinful world. We too, ourselves, still have an old sin nature and broken people in a broken world equals brokenness. Though it is not perfect, it is improvable. We can make a difference. Things change, people can be transformed, miracles happen and God intervenes. So we have hope. I think a bigger question for us might be, “Does all of life have to be uphill?” No it doesn’t. When we remember who we are and whose we are we can be grateful. Gratefulness, probably the first step towards actualizing the blessings of the righteous.

The Blessings of the Righteousness - Part 5

There are definite blessings and benefits to being a believer, not only eternal life and forgiven sin, but here and now blessings, and benefits, too. Many promises of the saved life are regrettably never actualized for several reasons. Primarily obedience and rebellion or sin, by our choice to wallow or be captive in it, prevents us from this joy-filled, spirit-led, victorious Christian walk. Our enemy also keeps reminding us of our weakness, failures, and shortcomings. We also get full of ourselves with pride, arrogance, and selfishness. Our enemy feeds this with the passion of this world and lots of distractions and confusion. We must resist and surround ourselves with good news, good people, and goodness. This spiritual battle is real and we cannot depend on anyone, or the church, to protect us. We are fully equipped at salvation to be victorious in this life. Not constantly, but most often. We have to pursue righteousness and be vigilant as we work out our salvation knowing we are blessed because He says so, so we know so. I am a lifelong work in progress, but I must commit to maturing in Christ and make progress in being who I am in Him.

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 4

Growing up in the 60’s, I had the privilege of living a year of my life in my van and also a year of my life in a Christian commune. These two experiences allowed me to live in the community when I was a Youth Coordinator at West Canoga Baptist Church in the San Fernando Valley. I also lived with minimal rent expense and was able to go to school full-time, and work a part-time job. My Youth Coordinator position only paid me a $25.00 gas allowance (gas was .53 cents a gallon) and a $150.00 monthly stipend. I worked at a local Exxon station during part of that time, and washed tennis courts part of that time. I was lovin’ life, serving the Lord, and so blessed. I was also keenly aware of my righteousness in Him. I was very disciplined for my age and especially during my time in my van and the commune when there was no T.V. and non-stop time living the Christian lifestyle. We were in the midst of the Jesus Movement and I gotta tell you, it was sweet.

God Was Not Created For Us, by Alejandra Mouzis

I recently started reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan.  I cannot seem to get past the first two chapters.  I keep reading those two chapters over and over.  I truly want to grasp and learn everything I can before moving forward.   This is a new concept for me.  I move so fast that I do not stop and learn from every experience before moving on to the next event or circumstance.   Is this not how most of us live our lives?

"Don't we live instead as though God is created for us, to do our bidding, to bless us, and to take care of our loved one?"

This statement alone has changed my way of thinking almost immediately!  I cannot believe one sentence could change a life.  Colossians 1:16, "For him all things were created:  things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. "

I have questioned God most of my life.  I have spent 12 years as a single mom and struggled to get by with a baby boy.  After my father died, my mom came to live with me.  I now had to financially support all three of us.  Many, many times throughout my life, I have asked the question ... why?  Why did my dad have to die so young?  Why is it so hard for me to get by when others seem to have so much?  Why did my car breakdown and forced ne to take the bus to work every day.  Why, why, why?

As I read these chapters, my life flashed before my eyes.  But, all along the answer to my WHY question was simply this:  .... because He's God.  He has more of a right to ask me why so many people are starving?  Why are their people with no homes or clothing?  Why are there people who don't know me?  We are in no place to demand that He give an account to us.  Can we be that arrogant to think God owes us an explanation?   God owes us nothing and we owe Him everything!

My prayers are now, "God.  I know things are going to happen today that I cannot change and do not understand, but please use me to do whatever you need done today!" I have been asking that question in the mornings and, although I work lots more than a 40 hour week, I seem to have lots of time to do things for other people and to do His work.   I have time to help friends in need, able to provide a home for someone in need, able to help my church home in whatever capacity they need and when they need it.

Just two weeks ago, Gerry and I fly up north to visit friends.  Although we thought it would be nice to get away and spent time with friends, God had other plans.  He needed me to spend quality time alone with my friend who was hurting.  While our husbands were out for the day, she and I went hiking through the redwoods and found ourselves talking about issues in our lives and it was a great opportunity for me to share how Go has changed my life.  God was present and He used me!

It's amazing how my life has been transformed  all because I asked Him to use me?  Does that mean that I don't have problems in my life.  Of course not, I struggle with issues every day.  But, God is in control and he is using me for His plan!  When that happens, my own issues seem to work themselves out.  Imagine that!

"Life is about serving God with the gifts he has given each one of us.  Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.  If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God.   If anyone serves, they should do so  with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever, Amen. " (1 Peter 4:10-11)

if you do not have a Church home, Grace Harbor Church invites and welcomes you to join us at 10:00 a.m. Sunday mornings.  Come see what God  is doing!

The Blessings of the Righteous - Part 3

Until they were categorized, I didn’t realize there were more than 60 Proverbs about the blessings of the righteous. I thought of Proverbs as primarily cryptic snippets of wisdom to remind me of the moral fiber of my Christian life. Proverbs served me mostly as goods that pricked my conscience and spurred me to the higher road I know I should be on. I am now freshly challenged, hopefully like you, to reconsider righteousness as a blessing and a responsibility. I am thinking of it this way… I need to think more often of my position and let that affect my disposition. I am no more perfect than I have ever been, but I am more aware than ever of my need for personal discipline. So, here are the next five blessings of the righteous. Remember, this is you and me we are talking about here. Hope you are encouraged by this teaching from God’s Word about Christ’s righteousness in us. We are righteous.

The Blessing of the Righteous - Part 2

Before we can truly appreciate the blessings of being the righteous, we must understand that we are. We are righteous before God because of Jesus Christ. His righteousness supersedes our righteousness. This means we have access to these blessings, but only when we constantly remind ourselves of our position in Him. Of ourselves, we do not deserve these blessings, but to glorify Him they are imputed to us at the moment of our salvation. Being aware of our righteousness helps us stay focused on who we are in Him.

Here are five more blessings compiled by Florence Brownfield, from her book, The Wisdom of Solomon.

The Blessings of Righteousness - Part 1

We have much to learn about righteousness. We as Christians misunderstand much about righteousness. Our enemy, satan wants us to believe we aren’t and can’t be righteous. Our Lord and Savior Jesus, blesses us with righteousness when we first believe and receive salvation, and the Holy Spirit. The fact is, God has made Christians righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. Righteousness is not self-righteousness. It is not earned. It is not being right. It is not being perfect. It is our position before God, with the blood of Christ as our covering. So we are righteous in Him. We miss so many blessings and so much empowerment from God, because we play this performance game about our righteousness. We need to get in touch with our righteousness and do better at who we are in Him, again, not to earn anything.

Knowing "THE WORD" is Essential to Knowing Jesus

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." John 1:1-2

In John 1:1-2 and 14, the Bible clearly declares, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. ... The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, full of grace and truth."

Proverbs for Lazy People (Part 4)

Last devotional on laziness or slothfulness. I think I want to close with three thought provoking comments that might help us face ourselves a little more objectively. I recently had a sobering conversation with a good friend over breakfast who helped me see with fresh eyes what I was turning a blind eye to and losing my objective perspective of my own stuckedness.

Proverbs for the Lazy (Part 3)

Excuses, excuses, excuses. I have used them myself, and have heard thousands of them. Usually referred to as reasons and explanations, they are still just excuses. Is there an excuse for everything? Sure seems like it. We have lowered expectations of our responsibility and raised expectations of our entitlements. How’s that working?

Proverbs for the Lazy (Part 2)

Solomon had a lot of workers and I am sure he saw every type of avoidance, sandbagging, stalling, distraction and diversion. I have made time and wasted time. I have produced and procrastinated; I have created the illusion of work and also worked my behind off. Laziness can be a hard job if you work hard enough at it.

Proverbs for the Lazy (Part 1)

Now for four devotionals for the lazy who most likely will never read them. The truly slothful, as the bible refers to them, are habitually so. There are a few character traits that I find particularly annoying and do not cope with very well. Laziness is one of them. O.K. I will tell you the others. Meanness is definitely one, divisiveness is another. I actually have far more compassion and tolerance for the lazy than I do the mean or divisive. Let me go ahead and be totally transparent and admit that those who are control freaks top my list. Now I have said it and I feel more honest. As I consider how much hurt and trouble the mean people, divisive (or troublemakers) and control freaks cause, I am feeling even more compassion for the lazy. Probably a good time to write these devotionals and share the proverbs about slothfulness. Just a few at a time. Wouldn’t want to wear out the lazy ones who might be reading them in a spurt of productivity.

Blessings in Disguise

I must say that when I was reading the following devotional as part of our morning routine, I had to read one sentence over again suggesting to us that we should "try to view difficulties as blessings in disguise". My first response was I must have not read it correctly because difficulties are just that - difficult and seemingly not at all a blessing. But, as with everything, one must read in context, and after doing that, it made perfect sense the point that the author (Sarah Young - who else because you know I love her writings) was attempting to get across. This struck such a chord in me because I can think of at least ten loved ones very close to our family who are facing incredible life struggles at this time in their lives.

Take Heart

"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." John 16:33

As we read the newspaper, watch the news on television, or get the update of the world on our PC’s and cell phones, one common thread is that there is a lot going on to make us feel anxious, concerned, and worried; whether it is the ongoing war in Iraq and Afghanistan, or the continuing struggle between Israel and Palestine, or all the various terrorist attacks throughout the world. And then of course, we watch as the stock market continues to take yet another major dive. Let us not forget our local news of the unemployment rate, layoffs, and violent crimes that we hear circling around us. It truly does seem bleak, or as Jesus told us, “we do live in a world full of trouble.”

The Purifier by Cecil Murphy

Malachi, the last of the writing prophets in the Old Testament, painted a double image of God in his third chapter. The "messenger of the covenant" in verse one refers to Jesus Christ and sets the context for his coming: "For he will be like a refiner's fire or a launderer's soap ..." (Mal 3:2 NIV).
First, Jesus is revealed as a refiner of precious metals. The hot fire removes all impurities from silver and gold. The second picture is of Jesus as a fuller. That's a launderer whose soap makes garments white.
The two metaphors illustrate the double thrust of the purpose of the coming of Jesus. Malachi stresses that it's time to get cleaned up. And we need to heed the message today as much as the people of Malachi's time did.
He comes to purify the faithful and to eliminate the unfaithful. After the purification, the worship of the chosen people will once again be acceptable to God.
As I think of those two images, my perception is that purification would be a painful ordeal, something I would rather avoid.
What would it take, I wonder, for God to make me "white like snow"? I'm not talking about the usual meaning we attach, giving us salvation and cleansing our hearts. This passage refers to what we experience after coming to Christ. It's what we theologically call sanctification, or setting apart.
The refining image sounds terrible to me. It's a picture Peter uses in his first letter. Although he writes out of his experiences of being persecuted, he doesn't lay the blame on outside forces. This is God at work in us, he says, and if we follow Jesus Christ, we're going to be refined. That's part of the preparation for eternity.
It reminds me of a devotional message I read many years ago by long-ago missionary to India, Amy Carmichael. She wrote about Nazirites, men in the Old Testament who vowed to live ascetic lives. One of their restrictions was that they could not eat grapes or drink wine. Carmichael asked, "What, no raisins?" They were denied even the simple pleasures of life. As Nazirites they were in a special relationship of total commitment to God and lived by strict laws.
I wonder if God has called us to be spiritual Nazirites. By that, I mean it becomes a matter of "others may, you may not." It's not that we set legalistic demands for others or ourselves. But it does mean that we voluntarily allow God to treat us more strictly than people around us. If we're truly spiritual Nazirites, we are living in the ongoing refining fire.
It's such a strange paradox. God gradually restricts our lives and shuts out what others might accept as ordinary pleasures. Yet the restrictive life is richer, fuller, and more enjoyable.
Most of the refining happens in silence and out of the public view. The people I consider the most spiritual-that is, the most purified-don't speak of their trials or their purifying. They submit to God's cleansing, but it happens in such a private way that only two people know about it: God and the person involved.
Something about that appeals to me, that is, until I'm the person involved. Then I hear myself ask, "Why can't I have a handful of raisins?"
The God who wants to sanctify or set us apart for specific divine purposes doesn't demand or lay heavy laws on us. We voluntarily assume the load.
As we listen for the divine whisper of guidance, our lives change. It comes as a challenge, maybe as a suggestion, but always to purify us. I think of it as a whisper, and when we respond, we change.
As we ask God for the purifying fire in our lives, we acknowledge that it's a highly individual matter. If God takes away our raisins, it doesn't mean that no one else can eat them. It's simply a choice made by us in obedience to the Spirit of Purification.
I've read about people who've welcomed purification, persecution, and hardships because they believe that they are living the way the Lord lived. I'm not quite there, and I don't know if I'll ever have that kind of therapeutic outlook on suffering. But still-with trepidation-I ask God to continue to purify my life.
Many of us have no sense of nearing the station of Full Spirituality. In fact, when we look back at our progress, it's as if we've scarcely moved forward. "All these years, Lord, and this is all the progress I've made?"
Maybe it's because we can't see ourselves objectively. But we can see the refining fire. Even if we could see our progress, the Messenger of the Covenant is cleansing us in dozens of little ways. Maybe we're more sensitive about the words we speak and the tone of voice we use. Or maybe Jesus is softening the anger that lurks within us.
Because our needs are so different, and our impurities so diverse, who can set up a formula for anyone else? The secret-if there is one-is in listening to that soft whisper and saying, "Lord Jesus, it hurts when you scrub away at me, but thank you for caring enough to do it." On one of my long prayer walks, after I had complained about the purifying process going on in my life, I realized that I was blessed by God. Right! Blessed! It means God cares enough to keep working with me. It reminds me that God still isn't through with me.
As I meditated along that line, a quiet joy filled my soul. "Yes, it's all right," I said to God. "Do it."
Dear friends, don't be surprised that you are going through testing that is like walking through fire. Be glad for the chance to suffer as Christ suffered. It will prepare you for even greater happiness when he makes his glorious return. --1 Peter 4:12-13, CEV

Do Not Worry

"Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more that food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?....Therefore do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat? Or "What shall we wear?" For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." Matthew 6:25-27,31-33

Wow! What a beautiful Saturday morning! It’s 9:00 am and it’s sunny and there’s a warm breeze blowing through the windows of my room. In the distance I can hear the familiar sounds of the infamous flock of wild parrots that inhabit the Tustin area. As I begin to sort through the stack of monthly bills, and not knowing how or which one I was going to be able to pay, all of a sudden, my black cat, Samson, came diving through the open window and running across my stack of bills. His eyes were as big as saucers and his heart was racing a mile a minute. As I held him to calm him down, I looked out the window and saw what had caused poor Samson’s trauma. The infamous flock of parrots were in my backyard eating the fruit off of our lemon and tangerine trees. They were under the trees just squawking up a storm and enjoying their breakfast of fresh fruits. As I sat staring in awe of this site, the Holy Spirit put this morning’s passage Scripture to mind. I have to tell you that I began to laugh and say “God You truly are awesome! In front of me was a stack of bills and I had no idea how I was going to pay them and truthfully I was stressed to the max, I mean I was at my breaking point, then what does God do? He brings in a flock of birds who are not native to California and He is using the fruit trees in my yard to feed His parrots. What an awesome lesson to be able to see and experience!

My Command, by Pastor Rick Ballester

John 15:12-13 “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.  Greater love has no one than this, that he lays down his life for his friends.”
The other night I was watching a television program called “Suits”.  In this episode, one of the main character’s friends called him from jail and asked him if he could come and bail him out.    Now mind you, the main character was totally and completely blown away because he had done this.  Because they had a huge blow out argument, in his mind he thought he had completely and totally destroyed and ruined their relationship of twenty years.  When the main character asked his friend why did you call me to bail you out of jail, his  response was that he knew and believed that out of all the people he knew, and out of all of his so-called friends that he knew that he would be the only one who would come and get him.  Because he was the only true friend that he has ever had.
Friendships are the greatest relationships that we need to grow and nurture.  Just like any given relationship, it takes time and effort to grow, and cultivate.  These relationships are beautiful and amazing and can also be very time consuming and even can be classified a ‘high maintenance’.  But, just like any other relationship, it is totally worth any and all of the effort needed to grow it into maturity.
We have the ability to grow and nurture healthy, loving  friendships if we follow the commands that Jesus has given us concerning them.  It’s quite simple – “Love each other as I have loved you.”  Wow!  What a great formula for developing solid friendships!  So, what are we to do?  We are to love our friends the way that Christ loved us.  Christ’s love for us is unconditional, and His love is given to us sacrificially.  What does this  sacrificial love mean?  It means that Jesus put the needs and desires of others before His.  Even if it meant that He would lose things that were important to Him.   Christ also exhibited awesome character qualities of compassion, kindness, forgiveness, caring and giving.  And, let’s not forget that He willingly gave His life for ours.
So as we develop new friendships, or as we continue to build and nurture our existing friendships, let us take to heart what Jesus desires us to do in this area of our lives.  Let’s love sacrificially, develop listening skills, give of ourselves and be encouraging.  If you do that with the other character qualities of Jesus we talked about, you are on the road to being a true friend.

Proverbs About the Poor (Part 5)

This is the last of the 25 proverbs that address the poor. I hope your heart has been quickened and your spirit blessed by their truth. We live in interesting times with the ability to see the oppressed in a click. Yet we feel hamstrung to respond and overwhelmed by our own greed, selfishness and tendency to pretend it isn’t there or that we don’t have to care. Today I feel like being blunt. So please know that if my commentary seems harsh that some of my points were learned in a mirror, not by looking at you.

  1. Be compassionate to other poor. (Pro. 28:3)
(Often the poor are the most compassionate)
  1. Understand that rich people can be pretentious, not wise. (Pro. 28:19)
(Ya think? Don’t suck up to the rich, it’s pitiful when you do.)
  1. Follow vain people and become poor. (Pro. 28:19)
(Because they can’t get enough or spend enough or have enough)
  1. Avoid the deceitful. (Pro. 11:4)
(Habitual liars and cons need a miracle from Jesus not you)
  1. Be patient and do your work. (Pro. 11:16)
(Deferred gratification is not an outdated concept, try it.)

I feel better. The truth shared in love. I hope you have taken to heart only what the Lord wants you to consider. Wise advice is only counsel. God is the only judge.
Be blessed my friends in Him, Pastor Fred

Proverbs About the Poor (Part 4)

Proverbs often point out some of the worst and most tragic things about us. None of us are exempt from being used as a proverbial illustration. Because of our old sin nature and our propensity for foolishness we are easy targets for the harsh truth. I am saddened not only by the many examples I know of those who have become repeat offenders, but by my own culpability in more than one of these points made by today’s 5 proverbs about the poor and poverty. Perhaps we have much to learn from those poorer than we. Maybe we are so quick to judge because we get nervous when the truth strikes so close.

  1. Be honest and poor rather than a fool and rich. (Pro. 19:2)
(Rich fools are sad characters.)
  1. The poor are often deserted by family and friends. (Pro. 19:7)
(Ouch, so easy to do)
  1. Wish others well even if you cannot help them. (Pro. 19:22)
(So much easier to ignore them and avoid them)
  1. Do not love pleasures and thus become poor. (Pro. 25:17)
(So hard to admit this)
  1. Even the poor can do God’s work. (Pro. 22: 2)
(Poverty is never completely immobilizing or disempowering)

I know somebody reading this is convicted besides me. There is so much more we could do and be through Him.

Proverbs About the Poor (Part 3)

Being poor by anyone’s definition, brings with it a list of other attached issues.  Living week to week or day to day with loads of unknowns and insecurities can bring other problems to light, or at least to the forefront.  Poverty is sometimes an escape from abuse, or control, or stress.  I must admit at the height of my own frustration with people, processes, pettiness, and pressure, I can have some longing for the good old days; living in my van, scrimping to get by, living simple and well within m means.  I have offered the possibility to my wife and frankly it becomes way more tempting recently, and more often.

These five Proverbs remind me what I have believed for years and years.  Pack light and be ready to go.  When you live simpler, become debt free, and minimize your obligations it allows you to consider what God might have in mind, if you were really open to it.  If you were free, what would God recommend?  Is poverty what you fear?  Are your things like anchors?  What do these 5 Proverbs open you up to consider?  Talk to God about it, I am.

1.  Little with love is better than a feast with hatred.  (Proverbs 15:17)
2.  Do not mock the poor.  (Proverbs 17:5)
3.  Do not offend a poor brother, reconciliation is difficult.  (Proverbs 18:19)
4.  Pray and be thankful.  (Proverbs 18:23
5.  A poor man is kept apart by his neighbors.  (Proverbs 19:4)

We resist change, we don’t like to have the status quo challenged.
Trust God alone.  Let Him lead.  Follow, it is less frightening than fear itself.

Food for thought in Him,

Pastor Fred

Proverbs About the Poor (Part 2)

This is a sensitive subject for me.  I have always (even as a little boy) been very moved by poverty.  I somehow really struggle with the distance between the rich and poor, and extremely troubled by the politicization of the poor.  How is genocide still possible in the modern world?  How can a blind eye be turned toward human suffering?  I am dumbfounded by “help” agencies, including many non-profits that are so inefficient at delivering resources to meet real needs.  You know how it is, right?  TOO many hands in the till,  and too much administrative cost.  Poverty is often created, pondered to, and entrapped for gain.  We are so in need of wisdom about the poor and the who, what, why and how of it.  These truths can help us separate our frustrations, our judgements, and ignorance from the real issues.
Here are five more proverbs to help us think wisely with my commentary attached in parenthesis.

1.  Do not spend as if you are rich. – Proverbs 13:7  (Credit is basically of the devil and herein is
a big part of the bigger problem.)

2.  The poor are not rebuked. – Proverbs 13:8  (Poverty is not sin in and of itself.  God cares
     especially for the poor.)

3.  Learn to manage your crops well. – Proverbs 13:23  (Or learn the hard way not to save and do
not consume all your resources before you have more.)

4.  Do not hate other poor people. – Proverbs 14:20  (This goes for “other gossips, “other fat
people”, and “other loud people”, too – just a partial list)

5.  Better little with the fear of the Lord than the troubles of wealth. – Proverbs 15:16  (The rich
are notoriously unhappy and some of our leaner times were better.)

Love these teachings.  Very inspiring and very revealing.  Hope you are inspired and a little exposed, too.

In His service,

Pastor Fred
