"So when they met together, they asked Him, "Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?" Acts 1:6
We human types, Apostles or not, can't seem to maintain our big picture objectivity very long. After the directive from Jesus to go to Jerusalem and wait for the gift of the Holy Spirit, they just had to ask if He was gonna take over and disempower the Romans and the power structure of the Temple Priests and frankly maybe use them in the new world order.
Funny, all of us, no matter who or what the circumstances always seem to look out for number one. Yeah, yeah Jesus has a plan, but how is it gonna benefit me personally? Must be why "prosperity preaching" still draws a crowd. What is in this Kingdom of God thing for me, by the way? Maybe some power or wealth or some other fringe benefit of being in the inner circle? Our corruptibility is so obvious. We are always looking out for the freebie or the pot of gold, or the winning ticket. We say it is about Jesus and His Kingdom, but if a hint of opportunity arises, watch all of us opportunists jump on a chance for fame or fortune. I know my own corruptible heart and I am just like you and the apostles too.
Lord, protect us from ourselves and help us to do your will even if it isn't beneficial to us or our aspirations or desires. Lord, use us at your discretion and forgive us for our ulterior motives.
Humbled and convicted, but not alone I am sure,
Pastor Fred
