What His People Don’t Know

"Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift, and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But my people do not know the requirements of the Lord." Jeremiah 8:7

In verse 4 of this chapter of Jeremiah God tells him to say these words and others to His people. I am sure if you are a parent or even a good friend you have been so exasperated with a child or someone you know and have begun your sentence with the word 'Even'. One of my favorite exasperated sentence starters with my children and some of my friends too has been 'Even a dog in the street knows.... Storks are big, skinny, dumb looking and awkward birds that have a tough time even getting off the ground. They are no aerodynamic wonder and have to flap constantly to stay in flight. You never hear of soaring and elegantly gliding storks. They do rhyme with dorks ya know. Doves, Thrushes and Swifts are not birds that easily fly either, and spend a lot of time on the ground and in the bushes. Migrating was a chore.

Each one has something uniquely special though. Just think storks and babies (lol), swifts have speed, thrushes are hyper and doves lovingly pair for life. No matter what their lot or limitations, they by instinct, know what to do. They go when it is time to go. They just do it. His people have something unique also called 'free will' and it makes doing what you need to do more than difficult sometimes too. But God has given people also special connection to himself that birds do not have. Though our instinct is basically evil, we have the opportunity for redemption. We can change; we can fight our tendencies and resist temptations. If we choose. But we must try to fly. We must take flight when it is time to go. We should, through our intimate relationship with Him trust Him implicitly to help us soar like eagles. Even though we look like storks and act like dorks. Don't exasperate your loving Father. Get out of the nest, pursue your destiny, and spread your wings. God made the sky, the wind, your wings and who you can be. Take off, what are you waiting for? He will show you where you are going, once you are ready to go. So study His Word, your flight manual and know your appointed seasons and the Lord's requirements.

Gotta fly,
Pastor Fred

  1. This particular devotional has made me "think" (there should be a bright red "danger" sign displayed on my head) probably more than any other recently. Thank you, Pastor Fred, for your relentless ability to speak His truth into my life!
