The sun and the Son

"May His name endure forever, may it continue as long as the sun." Psalm 72:17

This Psalm is written by Solomon and is about a King requesting God’s help for his son to rule justly and wisely. It is also a picture of Christ’s endless reign as Messiah. He alone can rule perfectly and with peace.

The sun has been around for a long time. When you think about it, we can’t mark time without it. But our sun has not been around forever. Somewhere along the line, God created it along with our whole solar system, galaxy, and the universe. There are innumerable suns in the cosmos. As important as the sun is to our existence (if it goes out or explodes, that would be very bad), the sun is not the most important thing. Ahhh….. a little play on words because the Son is the most important thing. His name is eternal. His name will endure forever. His name is the most important from before the beginning and after the end. The sun came and will eventually go. But, His name….Jesus, the Son will endure forever past, and forever future.

Is your thinking stretched a little? I hope so. Whenever we start thinking about the plan of God has to do with this one, or that one or this thing or that thing, please remember…His plan has everything to do with one thing and one thing alone. The One. His Son, His name. This Psalm helps me with some of Solomon’s wisdom to put the universe and time and reality into context.

As we live our days frame by frame and snap shot by snap shot, never forget the big picture which can keep us from misinterpreting our limited view.

As we live our days frame by frame and snap shot by snap shot, never forget the big picture which can keep us from misinterpreting our limited view. Step back, look up, look out there and consider Him…..truly above it all, beyond it all, through it all and in control of it all. You know the sun is huge and yet is so small when you think about the One who created it.

Amazing, Pastor Fred
