The Greatness of our God

"I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods." Psalm 135:5

No question here, right? We are confident and David is probably even more confident than we that the Lord our God is they Only One and that there is no other beside Him. He is the only true God and He is the personification of greatness. Small case 'gods' are a dime a dozen and can be invented with a thought. There are literally thousands of 'gods' that someone, somewhere, believes in, worships, fears, adheres to the tenets of and pays tribute to sincerely or not. Small case 'gods' are the inventions of man. Without man, they would not exist. Our Lord has always existed, even before we existed or anything existed. No one made Him.

You may ask, 'How do you know that?' I do know that the very same way David does. By faith, but also by the record of who He is. In the verses following this verse, David describes who our God is and what He has done is doing and will do. Given this introduction, let me share with you the rest of Psalm 135. I hope this inspires you and puts into perspective all of the other man-made 'gods'. Though it may seem high-minded or arrogant to ascribe to the belief in only one true God, it is the truth. The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is the only one true God, He is great, greater than all other 'gods'. We must know this as sure as we know our own existence. As a matter of fact, His existence is not contingent on human existence. Now for some awesome words about our awesome God.

"The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses. He struck down the firstborn of Egypt, the firstborn of men and animals. He sent his signs and wonders into your midst, O Egypt, against Pharaoh and all his servants. He struck down many nations and killed mighty kings Sihon king of the Amorites, Og king of Bashan and all the kings of Canaan and he gave their land as an inheritance, an inheritance to his people Israel. Your name, O LORD, endures forever, your renown, O LORD, through all generations. For the LORD will vindicate his people and have compassion on his servants. The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by the hands of men. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but they cannot see; they have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them. O house of Israel, praise the LORD; O house of Aaron, praise the LORD; O house of Levi, praise the LORD; you who fear him, praise the LORD. Praise be to the LORD from Zion, to him who dwells in Jerusalem. Praise the LORD." Psalm 135:6-21

These things are true, they happened, are happening, and will happen, just as the Lord revealed to David. No other 'gods' claim or say these things. No other 'gods' are real. There is one true God, Our Lord, know that He is great, that our Lord is greater than all 'gods'.

Praise the Lord.
