"My whole being will exclaim, Who is like you O Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them." Psalm 35:10
David had more enemies than anybody else I have ever heard about. Whether he was doing right or doing wrong, he always seemed to have several people who had it in for him. He was dogged by his mistakes and also persecuted for his faithfulness. David could easily have said, "I can't win!" Yet he realizes that like the poor who are destitute, he too was impoverished in the spirit and plagued by worries, fears and trouble that were overwhelming. He was robbed of his joy, peace and sense of respect. I am often impressed by his amazing ability to deal with all the obstacles in his life.
In the midst of whatever beset him he always in every Psalm gives a glimmer of hope and an insight into his understanding of the character of God. David indeed was a man after God's own heart. Not just because God said so, because it comes through in his writing and sharing over and over again.
In this Psalm he laments about his persecutors and the mockers and the naysayers who never seem to give him a moments rest from hassle. Yet he has the presence of mind in the middle of his torment to make this statement in verse 10. An interesting rhetorical question.... Who is like the Lord? The obvious answer is NOBODY. This question is asked more than once in scripture and it demands an answer from every one of us. If indeed there is nobody like him then why do we put our trust in anyone but Him? Why do we look everywhere but to Him for every other little thing in life? As sure NOBODY is like HIM, EVERYBODY is like David. We are all like each other. David just sees it and talks about it all the time.
In Worship we sing the song that comes from scripture... "Who is Like the Lord?" Remember the words? Who is like the Lord my God, compassionate and full of mercy, who compares to your great love? There's none in all the earth?!! When I sing this song I can't help but answer the rhetorical question with a little descant that I sing....." Nobody like you, Nobody like you." I, like David, know that God alone can rescue me from whatever it is. At times my whole being exclaims it. Feels good to say that there is NOBODY like the LORD. Hope you are blessed today knowing that the One who is like no other loves you.
His, Pastor Fred
