"Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God." Acts 5:38-39
These are the words of Gamaliel, a Pharisee who is trying to keep peace and buy time, because he knows, how popular the disciples were and feared the people would riot, if the disciples were killed. If you read ahead, they heed Gamaliel’s advice to a degree and only flogged the Apostles. (I know this is less severe than killing them, but still, a steep price to pay for spreading the Gospel).
The Apostles were great witnesses and certainly dedicated and willing to do anything for Jesus. Gamaliel was taking his risks, too. He was a mentor to Paul, before Paul converted to Christianity. He had studied the Scriptures and probably had questions about what this was all about. The passion and commitment of the Apostles is a good example to us of faithful zeal and sacrifice. But, Gamaliel’s advice to the Sanhedrin is good counsel for us. Oh, how often we should give things time, and wait and see. We should not rush to judgement. “The proof is in the pudding”, and “It all comes out in the wash” are wise sayings when properly applied.
I encourage us all to be both zealous when appropriate, and cautious when appropriate.
Let’s take the time to “consider counsel,” and “act in faith” when we should. As Gamaliel would say, “consider the case”, and act accordingly. Whether you get flogged or have to wait and see, make sure you are being wise in your decisions. When in doubt, do nothing, and seize the day. Ask God when to do what or maybe a little of both. Always seek Him, wise counsel, and His Word, especially in the most important matters.
With His grace,
Pastor Fred
