"And the kingdom will be the LORD's." Obadiah 21b
Obadiah. Shortest book in the Old Testament. Obadiah is given a vision. His indicting words from the Lord are a reminder to peoples, nations, and individuals about not presuming upon the blessing and protection of the Lord. The indictment is aimed specifically against Edom and Esau’s people. The stinging words are not so much a warning, but a judgement. Edam and Esau’s will be destroyed. I think I have boiled it down to three reasons.
1. Pride – Esau’s people forgot that God was supreme. They got full of themselves and neglected their creator and turned on the Lord’s people. Pride keeps us from glorifying God.
2. Selfishness – Esau could never get enough and always wanted more, especially everything that wasn’t his. His appetite was his undoing. He could not and would not be satisfied, and not thank God for anything. Stuff keeps us from seeking God.3. Lack of Compassion – When given opportunity Esau and his people did not defend, protect or have compassion on Jacob’s people or their oppression or difficulty. They actually “piled on” when the house of Jacob was down and being persecuted. We should not rejoice in anyone’s suffering.
The final few words sum it all up. “The kingdom will be the Lords.” In all of our pride, selfishness, and lack of compassion we must remember that everything is the Lord’s and when it comes to kings and kingdoms; He is the King and the Kingdom is His, too. Something to consider in the grander scheme of things.
A servant of the King and His Kingdom,
Pastor Fred
