"In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus Himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’" Acts 20:35
Sometimes stuff is quoted as Scripture that really isn’t in the Bible. In our effort to make sure we don’t invent Bible verses, we sometimes can toss stuff out that really is in the bible. Here are some examples:
1) “Cleanliness is next to godliness”—Moms love this one, but though the Old Testament talks a lot about cleanliness, and the New Testament talks about being spiritually clean, this adaptation of an edict from other sources is not about washing your hands or cleaning your room.
2) Or how about this one—“God helps those who help themselves”? Aesop is actually the originator of this, but pickpockets and thieves think it is their life verse.
3) “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” –This is Scripture. We might like to ignore this one or toss it out, but Paul is quoting what Luke and Jesus often said. This is the word of God. Paul worked hard, provided for himself, and was generous and encouraged us to be, because Jesus taught it. So we help others and we don’t grouse about it or get bitter. Paul worked hard and was compassionate. We must quote the Bible accurately and when it is Scripture…follow it.
In His Word,
Pastor Fred
