The last 10 Proverbs directed at youth are perhaps the most poignant, to the point and convicting. What to do and what not to do. What to say, what not to say. Remember, we love lists of direction, but we also avoid correction. Let these sink into your spirit.
- Speak the truth. (Pro. 23:23)
- Give your heart to your father and observe his ways. (Pro. 23:26)
- Bless your mother. (Pro. 30:10)
- Value your father’s friend. (Pro 27:10)
- Be wise. (Pro 27:11)
- Keep the law (Pro 28:7)
- Do not rob your mother or father. (Pro. 29:18)
- Do not curse your father. (Pro. 30:11)
- Have a plan or perish. (Pro. 30:11)
- Do not mock your father. (Pro. 30:17)
There are always two truths in every proverb. Whether spoken as a blessing or a warning, the opposite always holds true. Three examples: “Be wise” also instructs us not to be foolish. “Speak the truth” instructs us not to speak lies. “Keep the law” tells us not to break the law. We desperately need guidance in this world. The younger you are the more you need. The older you are, you still need more. Immaturity is only cured by maturity. Maturity comes from understanding and putting wisdom into practice. Learn it. Relearn it. Solomon knows what he is talking about.
