People who want to argue with me about what God's Word says are wasting their time. Of course they say that they are arguing with my interpretation of what God's Word says. Usually I direct their frustration with me to the Bible. Particularly in the cases about sexual immorality. The norm of the day or whatever is culturally acceptable justifies many in their minds to be involved in sexual sin. Some would say that all sexual behavior that is consensual cannot be against God's Word. After all, He made us sexual beings with a need to express that sexuality, therefore whatever way that comes out is a matter of personal choice as long as there are no victims involved. Have you heard these kind of arguments before?
Similar in logical progression and circular reasoning is the argument that since God created marijuana or opiates or whatever, then He must want us to enjoy them, "recreationally". This thinking begins with the premise of everything is okay, unless proven otherwise. Marijuana for example isn't specifically addressed in the bible, therefore, there are no given or absolute standards or guidelines or morals or anything and all behavior can be justified as long as we change the community standard of acceptance. We can then declare all values as relative and essentially primitive. Nobody wants to be primitive, right? Look how far we have come. Progress, right? Or is it?.
My point here is threefold. 1.) Don't argue with me, take it up with the author of The Book. 2.) Don't twist The Book in order to do what you please. 3.) Honestly now, is whatever it is, what the Spirit in you reveals to you as the truth of His will? If everything is permissible, then let's open the floodgates of what was the sin of the people in The Book of Judges.... "and everyone did what was right in their own eyes." Read on in Judges and you will discover where that led.
Granted, legalism must be guarded against. So should misapplication of The Word of God and the misrepresentation or the misinterpretation of Scripture. But, licentiousness must be guarded against also. The general degradation of societal norms that were mostly founded on biblical principles is the slippery slope of much of our current rush of cultural change. We are in danger of throwing the baby out with the bath water, more than ever before. As for me, I will stick with His Word as the only mandate for faith and practice. Be careful about rejecting His instruction, by doing so you reject Him. That is not okay. Something to think about, and pray about. May His Spirit guide you in the understanding of the application of His Word.
In His Grip,
Pastor Fred
