The repetition of advice to different audiences should not be confusing. Solomon specifically advises an audience and generally advises everyone with the same wisdom. God knows why.
- Do not fight. (Pro. 3:30) +4 times
- Do not envy sinners. (Pro. 23:17) +1 time
- Avoid the wicked. (Pro. 4:14-17)
- Be just. (Pro. 4:18) +15 times
- Do not be proud (Pro. 6:17) +16 times
- Do not shed blood. (Pro. 6:17) +2 times
- Be a faithful witness (Pro. 12:17) +8 times
- Do not steal. (Pro. 6:30-31) +2 time
- Keep your heart pure. (Pro. 4:23-27) +1 time
- Do not be surety for another’s debts (Pro. 11:15) +5 times
Note with me how often Solomon addresses pride. 16 Times! Think we need this message? Pride (and not the good kind) strikes all ages, classes, people groups and both genders. It is pandemic. Pride and foolishness go hand in hand. As the Word says… pride goes before a fall. I have personal experience too. Pride is not more prevalent in the rich, intelligent or attractive. Pride is the leverage point of our enemy. It puts us first, entitles us, given us special rights and privileges and is the source of most conflict and trouble. Pride began in the garden and runs rampant today. Pride both refuses help and refuses to keep. Vicious stuff. It is wise to differentiate between appropriate self confidence and integrity and foolish pride.
Trying to be wiser,
