Proverbs for Everyone (Part 6)

This list of 10 range from the subtle and sublime to the mysterious and meaty. Proverbs cause us both to reflect and flinch. Solomon’s God given wisdom is a treasure trove of golden advice. When put in short, concise bullet points we are easy targets for conviction.

1.      Do not be conceited. (Pro. 14:12)
2.      Sorrow and joy are mingled. (Pro. 14:13)
3.      Be patient (Pro. 25:15)
4.      Goodness is self satisfying (Pro. 14:14)
5.      Beware of backsliding. (Pro. 14:14)
6.      Be slow to anger. (Pro. 15:18)
7.      Consider the poor. (Pro 17:5)
8.      Devise good. (Pro. 14:22)
9.      Revere God. (Pro. 28:14)
10.  Be gentle. (Pro. 15:1)

I note how many of these are New Testament teachings. The reference to fruits of the spirit, James 1 and Pauline exhortations are obvious. Of course the New Testament writers are reading Proverbs, but more importantly, both Old and New Testaments are spirit inspired by the same Holy Spirit. The truth has always been the same. Truth is part of the nature of God revealed in His Word. Read this list again and you can reference each proverb in the New Testament. Oh how far the practice of the faith got and still gets from the basics. If we heeded just these ten, how sweet our Christian walk could be. Come to think of it, pick any five and become more like Jesus.

In Him,
Pastor Fred
