Proverbs for Everyone (Part 3)

I am amazed as I share these how often I am reminded of specific experiences where they apply. The book “The Wisdom of Solomon” edited by Florence Brownfield is a useful tool for helping us consider Solomon’s counsel from, so glad he asked for wisdom.

  1. Forsake the foolish and live. (Pro. 9:6) +2 times
  2. Be liberal and charitable. (Pro. 10:4) +4 times
  3. Do not gossip. (Pro. 10 :8) +7 times
  4. Do not be deceitful. (Pro. 10:10) +1 time
  5. Do not hate. (Pro. 10:12) +2 times
  6. Cover the transgressions of others. (Pro. 10:12) +5 times
  7. Keep learning and live. (Pro. 10:17)
  8. Do not slander (Pro. 16:27) +2 times
  9. Silence is golden. (Pro 13:3) +1 time
  10. Be religious. (Pro. 10:27)
A truth among these ten struck me today because it is exactly opposite of how our American culture functions. Did it actually say to “cover” the transgressions (sins) of others? Yes it does, and we should. Oh, how we love to expose din. Half of the reality TV shows and lots of news and even sports talk programs focus on the sins and shortcomings of others. We relish the opportunity to discuss and rehash the foolishness of others. Ever been on the other side of that derision? We especially love to see the rich, famous, religious and successful fall. Most make us feel better since we can’t seem to get better ourselves. I LOVE this wisdom. I try to practice it. Not always successful. Should do it more. Some of you should try it for the first time.
Speaking the truth in love,
Pastor Fred
